We are very excited to announce our children's summmer camps for 2016! These camps will be taught by special guest teacher, Kevin Warner, the Chair of ASU's Department of Theatre and Dance, and a Children's Dance Education Specialist! You do not want to miss this fantastic opportunity for your child to experience dance and how it relates to other subjects and areas of life.
Slithering Snakes and Silly Shapes Camp (Ages 4 and 5)
JUNE 13 – 17, 2016 9:00 – 11:00 AM
In this fun camp, pre-kindergarten children will use creative movement, songs and crafts to investigate the many shapes all around us, including how our bodies can make the silliest of shapes! With a focus on exploration, discovery and creative problem solving, we’ll investigate early skills in math and science as we use our bodies to better understand the world around us.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Camp (Ages 5 and 6)
JUNE 27 – JULY 1, 2016 9:00 – 11:00 AM
The fabulous books of Eric Carle make this literacy-based creative movement camp one of our favorites. The Tiny Seed, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear and other books by author and illustrator Eric Carle form the basis for explorations through movement and art, with a focus on how we can make up dances that tell stories.
Destination Dance! Movin’ and Groovin’ Around the World (Ages 7 and 8)
JULY 25 – 29, 2016 9:00 – 11:00 AM
In this camp, children will use creative movement and simple, traditional dances to celebrate the culture, people, landmarks and geography of places around the world! With a focus on social studies skills, we’ll investigate how dancing can inform us about other places and people around the world.
DRESS CODE: For creative movement, dress to move! Shorts with a leotard or t-shirt are encouraged. We’ll work much of the time in our bare feet.
NOTE: Creative Movement experiences for children are grounded in the National Core Arts Standards for dance, which guide national practice in terms of developmental levels for exploring the art form. For more information about the national core arts standards, visit http://www.nationalartsstandards.org/.
All class fees include materials and daily snack.
INSTRUCTOR BIO: Kevin Warner earned a MFA in Dance from Temple University, and has done post-graduate coursework in elementary and music education. He is certified in dance (PreK-12) and taught both dance and 3rd grade in public school settings in NC and NY. Currently, he serves as Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University. Previously, he served as Chair of the Department of Dance, and as Director of both the Interdisciplinary Arts for Children Program and Hunter Institute on Young Children at the State University of New York College at Brockport.
