🇺🇸 25 YEARS LATER — WE WILL NEVER FORGET 🇺🇸

Twenty-five years ago, our nation awoke to an ordinary September morning. Within hours, September 11, 2001 would become a day forever etched into the heart of America.

Today, we remember the innocent lives taken far too soon. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger when others were running away, the service members who answered our nation's call in the years that followed, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

We remember the families who have carried an empty place at the table for 25 years.

And we remember something else — how, in the darkest of hours, America came together.

For one another.
For our neighbors.
For our country.

A quarter century has passed, and an entire generation has now grown up without memories of that September morning. That makes our promise even more important:

We will tell the stories.
We will remember the names.
We will honor the sacrifice.
We will never forget.

There is a word most families avoid saying out loud.

Su***de.

Instead we reach for softer language. "We lost him unexpectedly." "She passed away suddenly." "There was an accident." We find every possible way to describe what happened without saying what happened.

For families who have lost a Veteran to su***de this silence carries a particular weight. Military culture already trains against vulnerability. Against asking for help. Against showing what might be perceived as weakness. When a Veteran dies by su***de that cultural silence compounds the family's grief in ways that are rarely acknowledged publicly.

The funeral where nobody says the word. The neighbors who stop calling. The well-meaning relatives who change the subject. The slow realization that the way their loved one died has made some people uncomfortable with their grief.

That silence is not protection. It is isolation.

And it is dangerous in ways that go beyond the grief itself. When families cannot speak openly about su***de the warning signs for others in the family go unrecognized. The elevated risk that runs through families never gets named. The conversations that could save the next life never happen because nobody will say what happened to the last one.

Shame does not protect families from su***de. It protects su***de from families.

Speaking the word is not disrespectful to the person we lost. It is the most important thing we can do for the ones still here.

As a Marine Corps veteran, our driver, Eric Cronise, has his own demons to deal with. One thing that helps him is being there for his Marine brothers and sisters when they need someone to talk to, and knowing they’re there for him, too.
Unfortunately, the memorial on Eric’s race car honoring the brothers he has lost continues to grow. 💔
Eric is a proud supporter of Mission 22. Mission 22 provides wellness and recovery programs, family support, community events, and resources intended to help veterans build connection and find support before they reach a crisis. So with Eric being a Marine Corps veteran and carrying a memorial on his race car for Marines he has lost, Mission 22 fits very closely with the message he’s trying to share, look out for one another, listen, and don’t let someone fight alone.

22 a day is 22 too many.

Please check on your friends. Lend an ear to someone who may be struggling. You don’t always need to have the right words or know how to fix what they’re going through. Sometimes, simply having a friend who is willing to sit, listen, and remind them that they matter can make all the difference.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

A day set aside by the entire world to say the same thing at the same time. That these lives are worth saving. That healing is possible. That nobody has to carry this alone.

Mission 22 has watched thousands of Veterans walk through our programs. Men and women who arrived convinced they were too far gone. That the version of themselves they used to be was never coming back.

They were wrong. Not because they were weak for believing it, but because that is what the wound tells you.

Healing does not require you to have it figured out. It does not require a plan, a diagnosis, or the right words. It starts with one step, and the first one is almost always the smallest.

Making a call. Telling one person the truth. Saying yes to something you have been declining. Asking a question you have been afraid to ask.

That is the whole first step. Just that.
