J/24 US National Championship – This Week!

Sept 10-13

J/24 Fleet 43, in conjunction with Portland Yacht Club, Sail Maine and the USJCA, are hosting the 2026 Portland Yacht Services J/24 US National Championship this week! The 34 boats will begin arriving to Portland, Maine tomorrow, with a practice day Thursday and racing Friday through Sunday.

Teams will be all vying for the top spot to be the 2026 US National Champions and with 4 Worlds berths (2 open, 2 Corinthian) on the line, the competition will be fierce on the starting line and throughout the weekend. Of the 34 entries, there are nine Corinthian teams, three female-helm and three-Under 30 helm. Nine races are scheduled over the three days and the race committee will be using the Vakaros Race Sense starting system.

The team that brings you the Downeast Regatta every year is once again bringing the shoreside fun to J/24 Nationals too! From socials at The Clam Bar and Portland Yacht Club, and their Traditional Maine Lobster Bake and Regatta Party at Portland Yacht Services, J/24 Nationals is action-packed with a great time both on and off the water!

Vintage lines, steady hands, and a name that carries its own kind of gravity. BLACK WATCH, US 71. She's a legendary 68-foot custom yawl designed by Sparkman & Stephens (Design No. 218) and built at the Nevins Shipyard in City Island, New York. Launched in April 1938 as Edlu II for Rudy Schaefer of the F.&M. Schaefer Brewing Company, she holds the historic distinction of being the very first S&S design to be tank-tested.

The 30 Square Meter class began in Sweden under the Square Metre Rule, a design rule that encouraged fast, elegant sailing yachts with fixed sail-area limits. The result was one of sailing’s most recognizable silhouettes: slim hull, long waterline when heeled, low topsides, and a rig that looks impossibly tall until the boat starts moving. BIJOU II may be beautiful, but she is very much a racing boat. With Chris Bouzaid at the helm, BIJOU II has become a familiar name in the classic yacht scene. She has won in Classic divisions from Boothbay, to Camden and Castine.

UNCAS, sail number 6. A Buzzards Bay 18 with a story reaching back to Nathanael G. Herreshoff’s 1903 K Class design, UNCAS brings one of the great classic daysailer shapes back to life. Long, low, and balanced under a generous gaff rig, she has the easy grace of a boat drawn for real sailing: open cockpit, cream canvas, varnished spars, and just enough motion to remind you why these designs endure.

BIJOU II is a 30 Square Meter, one of the most distinctive classic yacht types on the water. Designed by Knud Reimers and built in 1972, she carries the unmistakable look of the Swedish skerry cruiser tradition: long overhangs, narrow beam, low freeboard, and a tall rig that gives the boat a striking, almost effortless speed. The “30 Square Meter” name refers to the class’s measured sail area, but the magic is in what designers did around that rule: elegant hulls, efficient rigs, and boats that come alive when they heel.

BESHERTE may come from a 1903 design, but she is no museum piece. Sailing in the Classic Daysailers division, BESHERTE shows exactly why these boats still matter: low freeboard, a long clean sheer, a big expressive rig, and the kind of balance that makes a small classic feel alive in the hand. In these images, she looks perfectly at home with that deep blue hull moving with real purpose.

BESHERTE is a Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 18, one of the most graceful small-yacht designs from Nathanael G. Herreshoff. The original Buzzards Bay 18 was designed in 1903 and built in tiny numbers: just five boats between 1903 and 1904. None of those originals are known to survive, which makes BESHERTE part of a special modern chapter: a faithful recreation of a nearly lost design. At 29 feet on deck, with an 18-foot waterline and a powerful gaff sloop rig, the Buzzards Bay 18 carries the look of a much larger classic yacht in a compact daysailer form.

After decades on both coasts, Pacific racing, a return to Newport, and years awaiting rescue, Kirawan was brought back through a major restoration in Rhode Island.
