How a funeral reminds us of what to focus on for us living.
This weekend, I attended a funeral which created much reflection:
1. Friends and family remember how you touched their lives through your kindness and actions. No one does eulogies on how much much we made in the markets or the kind of cars we drove. We are remembered for how we make (made) people feel.
2. While family is typically our go to support, surprisingly it is our friend network that comes through with support the best way they know: driving 4 hours to be with you for a day, feeding you when you can’t be bothered to think about your hunger, being an ear to hear about your memories.
I witness how friend after friend showed up for the widow because the memories she and her deceased husband created with them.
3. The widow or widower will not be alone when she’s invested her time in a deep friendship network. Our web of friendships catch us from the falls of tragedies. Without our friends, it is truly a lonely life indeed.
It’s seems blaringly obvious and we’re reminded about it in poetry and literature, but truly how we make people feel is our legacy.
I know I myself will work on this more.

Why I workout like Warren Buffett.
In investor , book, The Philosophy of Money, he points out that Warren Buffett amassed most of his wealth after his mid 60’s. That’s 70 (of his total 90) billion Buffet earned after the age of 60.
While we all think of him as a genius investor, Housel reminds that Buffet has been investing for 75+ years.
Buffett’s annual return of 22% certainly isn’t normal (market average 8-12%). However, Jim Simons of hedge fund Renaissance Tech has a return of 66% annually but he has 72% LESS money than Buffett.
I don’t get how that’s possible?
Simons 66% returns have only been going on for 33 years compared to Buffetts; 22% returns over 75 years. That’s compounding interest at play aka consistency over a long time yields amazeballs returns.
What does that have to do with fitness, Tina?
As with investing, the lifetime returns of physical fitness isn’t about our hardest workouts or extreme performances.
Longevity & physical fitness are about the pretty good workouts whose level you can sustain mentally & physically on a consistent basis for a long time.
Where exercise differs than investing is that we can ALL be the Warren Buffett for our bodies by simply being consistent in our exercise efforts over a lifetime.
Not HARD AF, just pretty good often.
How do you feel about being your body’s Buffett with me?

I don’t walk for mental health - I walk for sleep!
If you’ve followed my journey last year, I’ve had major sleep issues this past year.
For some people, it starts through a traumatic event or stressful work period that disrupted their sleep patterns. For me, it most certainly is due to my fluctuating hormones as I go through menopause.
Over 50% of women going through menopause have sleep issues!
Just like low bone mass or osteoporosis, it happens to a MAJORITY of women, not a minority.
And, of course when I was younger, I gave it no thought since it wasn’t happening to me.
But, since it has, the silver lining is that my problem, became a puzzle. This puzzle I needed, wanted, to figure out and without the aids of drugs, which I did turn to (ambien) during this journey.
I wanted to share one of the first lines of strategies that any behavioral sleep doctor and neuroscientist would suggest -go get outdoor sunlight exposure.
Start with daily walks in the morning and night. Nothing crazy, shoot for a minimum of 10 minutes each walk and keep that regular.
Besides working to set your circadian rhythm which is the body clock that everything runs on from hunger, to energy to sleep, it does make life feel better being outside.
I assign walks for my Master Your Body mentees once they’ve nailed down their strength workout consistency - it’s that important that I make it a necessary health activity!
How do you prioritize walks?
P.S. The Master Your Body mentorship program applications close this Friday 6pm. Apply so that we can chat about whether this is a good fit for you! (Link in my bio)

If you’re trying to start working out then it’s completely okay if you begin with something short and easy!
What’s important is that you develop the habit of showing up even on the days when you’re not feeling it 💜

‘Twas 2 days after Christmas and already I’m seeing all these post-holiday detox and cleanses cropping up again all over the TV, social media and the radio and I’m here to suggest to you to save your money on these products and protect your mental well being.
Listen, a calorie deficit will (very likely) have you lose weight. The start of any calorie deficit, especially a hyper restrictive one after a weekend of enjoying carbs and alcohol and not enough water will *most* likely end up in a drop in (water) weight - this can be 3-5 or more pounds depending on the human and their body.
This does not mean that shake or cleanse “meal” plan was a magic bullet to a sustainable weight loss.
Why do you think folks need to keep doing them over and over again - 🤷🏼♀️
If you are looking for health, then dropping weight isn’t necessarily the key factor; it’s the habits and behaviors that we integrate into our lives, with consistency that will support our immune systems, hearts, lungs, brains, movement patterns and more.
So, in 2022, instead of perpetuating the diet cycle leaving us frustrated and dissatisfied let’smove. Let’s rest. Let’s enjoy nutrient dense foods. Let’s enjoy less nutrient dense foods. Lets let go of obsessive food monitoring and tracking. Let’s be more mindful. Let’s meditate. Let’s laugh. Let’s talk kindly to ourselves. Let’s spend time doing things we love. Let’s focus on quality over quantity.
Let’s reframe what health means
In we do not put an emphasis on weight loss or physique change to allow us space to redirect our energy on movement and nutrition that fills us up, not shrinks us down.
If you’re looking for a strength training community that’s different from what you’re used to, we have spots available at each of our membership levels to meet your needs in 2022 and beyond.
Use link in bio to schedule a 15 minute Q and A chat with us or try a first month of the Straight Up Strong membership (programming, coaching and live group sessions!) for $49!
See you in January (or any month because strength training is for everybody all times of the year!!)
