Amen. Love this river and its history!
In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the upcoming Head of the Charles, we recognize the original name of the Charles River. The native name for the river was Quinobequin, possibly meaning “meandering” in Massachusett, from quinnuppe — “it turns.”
The river, known as the Quinobequin by its Indigenous stewards, was used and cared for by the Massachusett, Wampanoag, and Pawtucket peoples who lived in what would become known as Boston and Cambridge. At the time of European colonization in the early 1600s, Massachusett settlements were present along the river at Nonantum (present-day Newton) and Pigsgusset (present-day Watertown).
This coming weekend, as you race down the course or launch from CRI on Nonantum Road, take a moment to honor the river’s deep history and those who first navigated its waters. And as always, enjoy its graceful turns. 😉

Who's joining the mass exodus from Twitter to BlueSky? Connect with us there, it's a little bit lonely for rowers! I find it very engaging and much less toxic. Many features will be familiar to Twitter users.

Check out these stunning pre-regatta river pics from HOCR tech gurus Eric Malkowski, Steve Sutter, David Leslie, & Richard Broberg from their pilot series of daisy-chained cameras along the course! And huge thanks to them for setting us up with an internet access point capable of live streaming! It made all the difference.
