The Planning Effect: Growth, Clarity, and Smarter Compensation

This week I’m meeting with three clients to review how their businesses have performed this year — even though the year isn’t over yet. That’s intentional. Strong firms don’t wait until December to “see how things went.” They get ahead of the curve, evaluate performance early, and use that insight to shape next year’s strategy.

And once we complete these reviews, we’ll move directly into building their strategic plans for next year.

So for the next four weeks, these newsletters will focus on why year‑end prep and planning matter so much — and why the firms that plan consistently outperform the firms that don’t.

We start with the most fundamental truth:

Law firms that create business plans perform better than those that operate reactively.

And the data backs it up.

The Cost of Hiring Before You’re Ready (And Why Many Lawyers Chase the Image of Success Instead of the Reality)

I spoke with a lawyer recently who told me he wants to grow his business. He said what many attorneys say: “I think I need to hire.”

Then he told me something even more important: he had already tried to hire someone — and it didn’t work out. It cost him money, time, stress, and momentum. And after listening to him describe his situation — the overwhelm, the lack of structure, the reactive days, the constant firefighting — I told him something most consultants would never say:

“You should not hire. You are not in control of yourself. Hiring right now would make your situation worse.”

He paused. Then he nodded. Because he knew it was true.

I’ve been using AI for almost three years — not casually, not experimentally, but as a core part of how I work, think, and produce.

And after hundreds of hours of hands‑on use, I’ve come to a simple conclusion:

AI is powerful, but it is not reliable. AI is helpful, but it is not expert. AI is impressive, but it is not trustworthy on the things that matter most.

And the public is starting to feel this too.

We’ve already seen the first major swing in sentiment:

Euphoria: “AI is magic! It can do everything!”
Disappointment: “Wait… this isn’t as good as I thought.”
Frustration: “Why does it keep getting things wrong?”
Anger: “This thing cost me time, money, and stress.”

These swings are predictable — and they matter for law‑firm owners.

This week, I want to talk about what this means for your firm, your clients, your staff, and your competitive advantage.

Every law‑firm owner wants a team they can rely on — staff who take initiative, communicate professionally, anticipate needs, and represent the firm with confidence.

But here’s the truth most owners quietly admit:

They don’t have the time, structure, or bandwidth to develop staff into the professionals they need them to be.

And yet, staff development is one of the most powerful levers a firm can pull.

This week, we’re talking about how to develop your staff into future leaders — and why this creates professional depth, strengthens referral relationships, and allows lawyers to accomplish far more with less stress.

Every law firm owner knows how valuable referral relationships are.

You work hard to build them. You nurture them. You protect them. You deliver excellent work so those business partners continue to trust you.

But here’s the part most owners overlook:

Your staff interact with your referral partners too — and those interactions can strengthen or weaken the relationship.

A single poor experience with your staff can undo years of goodwill. A single excellent experience can deepen trust and increase referrals.

This week, we’re talking about how to train your staff to enhance your referral relationships — and why this is one of the most important competitive advantages your firm can build.

Training your staff to deliver a first‑class impression is not optional. It’s not “nice to have.” It’s not something you do when things slow down.

When your staff delivers a world‑class first impression, you gain: 1. Higher conversion rates More callers become clients — not because your legal skill changed, but because your experience did.
