What it takes to be called the "greatest" in a profession? In example lets talk basketball; Michael Jordan & Lebron James. Firstly I think it is sad because another thought of "goat" is gone and has become forgotten. Yes I am talking about Kobe Bryant! Who played 20 seasons in the NBA a closer similarity of Lebron James 23 and counting for him. Another is that the two of them went into the NBA right out of High School unlike Jordan who was recruited to the NCAA (North Carolina) where he won a national championship by making the final shot in 3 seasons. Michael only played 14 seasons in the NBA, just imagine if those 3 colligate years where in the NBA; how many more titles, awards, championships would he have had?! Things that make you go hmmm! Ok so lets lay this to rest and educate the younger generation that has learned to act (flop) instead of learn to do what it takes to not accept defeat. You ready to analyze the nitty-gritty? The ball don't lie!

“He’s an animal out of the bullpen”

He isn’t wrong and we got a glimpse of this before when Pivetta pitched out of the bullpen in the 2021 ALDS bringing elevated velocity (compared to when he started that year) making 2 appearances against Tampa Bay. I remember seeing and saying “wow, where did this guy come from?!?” In 2 appearances out of the pen that year, he held a very tough Tampa lineup to 7 hits in 8 2/3 innings while striking out 11 and walking 3 and a very respectable 3.12 ERA in a small sample.

This season started out rough for Nick in the rotation. He was none too pleased when Cora informed him of the decision to move him to the bullpen, being brutally honest and saying “I don’t like it, but I will give it my all and contribute to the team any way I can.” That’s exactly what you want to hear from a veteran pitcher in that situation. And what have we seen?

As a starter this year, Nick had an ERA of 6.30 in 40 innings covering 8 starts. Flip the switch to the pen, and he’s got a 1.98 ERA in 41 innings covering 17 appearances. He’s never been hotter than he is now currently on a 12 2/3 scoreless streak in which he’s whiffed an astounding 19 strikeouts. People questioned the competition when he was masterful against the A’s with 6 scoreless and hitless innings, but then he turned around shut down the team with the best record and most dangerous lineup in the Big Leagues!! I’d say he’s earned his way back into the rotation, but what he’s doing now in the role he is in is too good to tinker with.

He also happens to be Mike Harrington of The Happy Hour Social Club’s favorite player on the team, which earns him brownie points with me.

Keep it up Nick! The move was a blessing in disguise! Get us to the playoffs and get yourself paid this off-season. I think you’ll garner a lot more interest as an assassin out of the pen than any starter with an ERA north of 6. And I hope we keep you!
