Connecting students in times of social isolation

Since 1999, Boston Scores has provided students at Boston Public Schools with team-based soccer and enrichment programs that promote students' health and well-being, academic engagement, and civic leadership. As schools had to close in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we took the difficult decision to pause our direct service (in person) programs for the first time in our 20-year history.

Many students in Boston and across the nation currently experience an unimagined level of social isolation as they are staying home, unable to meet their friends and share their fears and feeling of uncertainty. At Boston Scores, our belief in the power of team-based education programs doesn’t waver in times of social crisis such as the one we in Boston — and much of the world — are facing today. It grows even stronger. Our need for community and the necessity to stay physically and mentally engaged is more important now than ever.

This is why we decided to launch a virtual program that will draw on our traditional soccer, poetry and service-learning curricula. Every Monday, we will release an instructional video that will teach a new soccer skill here on this page. During the remainder of the week, we will expand on that lesson and highlight contributions from the community. We aim to connect students and show them that they have a place where they belong while being provided with meaningful activities to do at home.
