'Stay in It and Push' - Interview With Women's Quad on Bronze Medal The US Women's quad came through for a bronze to cap off a three medal day for the USA

Enjoy Kristi Wagner '11 (rowing bow) and her USA Women's 4x in yesterday's exciting A Final race!

Just a reminder--Kristi learned to row in the Wayland-Weston middle-school program and rowed for our high school team for four years, serving as a captain in her senior year, before heading to Yale University, from which she was graduated in 2015. She went on to become a U.S. National Team rower and a two-time Olympian, racing at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. She is also a 2023 World Championship bronze medalist in the women’s double sculls.

Insightful commentators are Martin Cross, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist for Great Britain and longtime broadcast analyst for World Rowing, Henley Royal Regatta, and The Boat Race, and Camilla Hadland-Horrocks, a former British junior international rower and experienced World Rowing commentator.

For today's Wayland-Weston community, there's something pretty special about watching one of our own on the World Championship start line.

Six Wayland-Weston Rowers Recruited To College Teams Six local rowing graduates have continued their athletic careers at colleges across the Northeast.

Congratulations to alumna Kristi Wagner '11 and her USA Women's Quadruple Sculls crew, World Championships bronze medalists in today's Final A with a 6:10.33 finish. Well-rowed, Krist and USA!

Sixteen Wayland-Weston Rowing student-athletes graduated from our program last spring. Six were recruited and are rowing in college today.

* Andrew Cui — Dartmouth College
* Jacob Zeng — MIT
* Sehbu Parsekian — Wesleyan University

Colin Bradley (Hamilton), Michael Lappi (UCLA), and Tony Ohanian (BU) are also heading to top colleges, with opportunities to walk on to their rowing teams.

Here’s what families need to understand: collegiate rowing can create opportunities that few high school student-athletes ever consider.

NCAA Division I rowing programs offer athletic scholarships, and Ivy League and other colleges recruit rowers and coxswains and allocate roster spots to student-athletes who develop through the sport.

Since 2000, 89 Wayland-Weston alumni have gone on to row and cox at 45 Division I and III colleges, on 4 National Teams (USA, Canada, Germany, and Puerto Rico), and in 5 Olympic Games (for USA, Canada, and Germany).

None of these student-athletes came in as experienced rowers or coxswains. They started on our middle school or high school novice team. No rowing or even athletic background needed. No rowing family. No prep-school program. No experience expected.

They simply showed up after school at Lake Cochituate and learned how to row. That same opportunity starts Monday, August 31.

Our fall novice program runs for nine weeks, six days a week, with five regattas, through the end of October, ages 14–18. Beginners are welcome and are for Wayland and Weston high school students thinking seriously about their future. Rowing is more than a varsity sport at Wayland and Weston high schools. It can become a pathway to college opportunity—and a way to distinguish yourself in an increasingly competitive admissions process.

The student-athletes above started exactly where every beginner starts: at the beginning.

World Championships update. Congratulations to Kristi Wagner '11 and her USA Women's Quad, 1st place in today's Semifinal 2 finishing in 6:20.41 and fastest among all boats in both Semis. They advance to Final A on Saturday at 6:39 a.m. Amsterdam time, 12:39 a.m. EST. Good hunting, Kristi and Team USA!

Congratulations to alumna Kristi Wagner '11 and her USA Women's Quad who placed 2nd in yesterday's Heat after a fierce finish, coming within 0.05 seconds of overtaking Switzerland and now advancing to Thursday's Semis.
