Christopher Collet (Rhode Island Track Club) is the USATF-New England Athlete of the Month for September 2026.
At the Lone Gull 10K which served at the USATF-NE Championship, Collet won the race in a record time of 29:25, breaking the previous standard by 10 seconds (Lous Serafini, 2019). The time was also the third fastest winning time of any 10 km race run in New England.

The final race in the WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING ASSOCIATION World Cup is next weekend in Beaupre, Quebec at the DĂ©fi des Couleurs Uphill and Classic Mountain Races!! USATF is sending 15 athletes that qualified at the US Uphill and Classic Mountain National Championships this past Summer. They will have the opportunity to compete against the best mountain runners from across the world! We will be posting regularly from the races next weekend.

Four USATF-NE members established pending USA Masters 1 Hour Run records along with five additional distance records in the 12th annual 1 Hour Run at Manning Field in Lynn MA. Saturday's conditions were conducive to fast running.

Dan Vassallo (Central Mass Striders) broke the M40-44 distance by covering 18,848 meters (11.71 miles) over the hour; the previous record of 18,586m dated back to 1993. On the way, Vassallo also bettered age group times for 15,000 meters and 10 Miles.
Three women made the record board. Mary Cass (Liberty AC) matched the triple record achievement for W65-69 (13,208 meters for hour), Amory Rowe Salem (Cambridge Sports Union) bettered the hour (14,575 meters) and 15,000 meter marks, and Barbara Belanger (Liberty AC) covered 7371 meters for a new W85-89 standard. (All records subject to ratification).
The event was hosted by Lynn Parks and Recreation, and director Joe Abelon was supported by staff of the Lynn Woods race series and Lynn English ROTC.

The USATF-New England Annual Meeting held on September 27 included a business meeting as well as elections for all board positions.
Welcome the new association President Rick Lajoie (Holyoke MA). Rick, a past vice president, is a respected long-time certified official. Eight new board members will join 8 returning members to serve in administrative and sports chair positions. Anyone interested in working with a sports committee should contact that chair. 🏆 Huge congratulations to Mary McDonald, named the USATF New England Athlete of the Month for August 2026! 💨

August was an extraordinary month of personal bests, wins, and inspiring leadership for Mary:

🥇 1st Place - Martin Richard Invite Girls’ Wheelchair 400m (1:21.59) & Mile (5:44.15)
⚡ New Personal Best - Falmouth Track Festival Elite Wheelchair Mile in 5:28.00 (lowering her PB by over 16 seconds in a single day!)
🥉 3rd Overall - B.A.A. Carson Beach Shoreline 5K in 16:23 (a massive 19.2% improvement!)

đź’¨ASICS Falmouth Road Race - 48:09 (6 minutes and 34 seconds faster than her 2025 time!)

đź’™ Community Impact - Named the first-ever Chelsea Road Race Wheelchair Ambassador and honored as a WPRI Hometown Sports Hero!

Cross Country update - The Brown Bear Cross Country meet at Highland Park in Attleboro MA which was postponed due to last weekend's nor'easter is rescheduled for this coming Saturday, October 3. However, the meet will NOT be a part of the USATF-NE XC Grand Prix due to the date change as not all entered USATF-NE clubs and individuals may have ability to attend on a new date. (This matches Road Race Grand Prix policies)

Meet Registration has also re-opened through Wednesday Setember 30 at 11:59 p.m. Check the host BrownRunningClub.com website.

Cross Country Runners - Saturday's (Sept 26) Brown Bear Invitational in Attleboro MA is cancelled. The race was supposed to be event #3 in the 2026 USATF-NE XC Grand Prix.
There is no word on rescheduling, nor if a rescheduled event will be part of the Grand Prix. Watch the website for updates.
The next scheduled series event is the October 11 HFC Striders XC Festival.

Bob Gidari (Goffstown NH) and Justin Kuo (Brookline MA) were named as two of only five 2026 inductees to the USATF National Officials Hall of Fame. Both are also current members of the USATF New England Board of Governors.

While most Halls of Fame require being retired from an area of involvement, officials are recognized for career long achievements (and may still be officiating for many more years). Criteria for nomination include, among other activities,
- serving as a competition official for a minimum of 20 years and working at multiple levels of competition from youth through international
- exhibiting leadership and acting as a mentor to younger officials. and
- having been selected as a head official, coordinator, or administrator at national or international events
You'll see them year around at track & field, road, and cross country events at all levels throughout the year in the association.

They join New England association officials Ken Caouette, Laurie Boemker, and Pat Lavelle in the USATF Officials Hall of Fame.
Formal induction will be held at the USATF Annual Meeting in December.

The New England Association is well resourced and provides a great opportunity for sports leaders to bring their ideas to fruition.

Step up and lead the sport across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont—run for leadership at the 2026 USATF New England Annual Meeting!

USATF New England is seeking dedicated leaders to run for open governance positions that shape the future the Association. Every board seat is up for election, and we are actively recruiting candidates across all branches of association leadership:

1. Officer Roles (Executive Leadership — 2-Year Terms)

President: Directs association strategy, chairs board meetings, oversees operations, and represents USATF New England at our race series and meets

Vice Presidents (3 Positions): Support executive leadership, coordinate cross-discipline initiatives, assist committee heads, and advance association strategic goals.

Secretary: Maintains association records, oversees official correspondence, records meeting minutes, and ensures governance compliance.

Treasurer: Oversees financial reporting, annual budgets, balance sheets, and association compliance alongside the board.

2. Sports Committee Chairs (1-Year Terms) Program directors who oversee discipline-specific circuits, championship scheduling, Grand Prix series, and grassroots development across:

Track & Field (Open, Masters, and Youth Athletics)
Long Distance Running (Men's, Women's, and Masters LDR)
Cross Country
Mountain / Ultra / Trail (MUT)
Race Walking

3. Athlete Representatives (3 Positions — 1-Year Terms) Active competitors who ensure the athlete voice directly guides board policy, championship standards, prize money structures, and budget allocations.
