Working on desensitization with Koda since he can be quite jumpy. Starting with something simple, the tarp! My goal is to simply present something new and scary in a way he can explore with his natural curiosity. I don’t let him run away, but I do allow him to figure it out in his own way. Tarps are great to start with because the sound, look, texture, are new!

During rains first bath with her mama she almost flipped herself over. So we have been working extra hard on getting her comfortable being bathed. I’d say she’s doing phenomenal!
Miss Rain is in for training to get some holes filled in for her new mama! She really doesnt understand how to lunge, but is green broke under saddle. So we will be filling all her holes and getting her all set up over the next month. She’s a smarty pants and figured out lunging w/t really quick.
Kota has been much more polite and we haven’t had any bucking as of late! Very proud of him
Choc is way more relaxed in everything we do. We’ve spent so much intentional time just enjoying each other’s company. He’s even building muscle and slowing his canter greatly.

Meet Kota!
Kota is in for a refresher. He likes to buck and be a boy in the sandbox, but he’s naturally good hearted and I’m excited to get him working.
We had our first ride yesterday and he tried to dethrone me after 3 steps (spoiler: it didn’t work) and we had a nice polite walk after that.
Choctaw update:
Choctaw is making wonderful progress.
His goals: trust, slow his canter, slow his trot, refine some things, and mount from anywhere easier.
He came into the stall to hang with me on the first call (normally I give him 5-10 mins before he even thinks about joining me), his trot is slowing and is almost a jog, his speedy canter is much more relaxed and we are nearing the lope stage, and he’s parking and standing much better for mounting!
I ended our session with taking a short break and sitting in his stall with him. Normally he leaves after a few minutes, today he sat with me, kept “checking in” (as you’ll see in the video), and fell asleep.

Arlo update:
Tarps really aren’t so bad! He’s still not keen on me picking up the tarp while we ride (he’s close!), but he’s no longer interested in big explosions on the ground when he’s scared. He stops, evaluates, sniffs, and calms.
Arlo’s desensitizing is going great! He’s going from bolting at anything scary to learning to stop and explore the things that scare him. Proud of him
One thing Choctaw’s owner wanted him to work on is being able to have her mount from anywhere and him stand still. So we teach him to park! You can see that he’s really overcome his fear of lunge whips and now understands they won’t hurt him too.

Choctaw update!
Choctaw has been building SO MUCH trust in people. Yesterday he not only got to learn how to respond without fear to the whip and use it help direct him to the mounting block (self park here we come!), but he had 2 other people doing it beside me. In addition, he was so calm and trusting with us three that he fell asleep while being loved on for each one of us!

Arlo update!
He’s been working on desensitizing. He was doing really well and then when a storm came through on Thursday it set him back a bit, but yesterday he had some great breakthroughs and was actively exploring and searching out the things that were scary. On the right track again!
