Meet the Instructor ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ

Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Christina Canavan and I teach from my home in West Boynton Beach, FL. I was certified as an Infant Swimming Resourse (ISR) Instructor in July 2019 and started my first session in September 2019 from the Boynton Beach YMCA. After a few sessions and Covid I decided to move to my home. Water safety is my passion.

A little back story, in July 2014 my husband and I welcomed identical twin boys, Jaxon and Leyton. We could not have been anymore blessed. In December of 2014, after months of looking we found a home for our then family of 6. We were excited to not only have a large backyard for the children to play but also an inground pool. Little did we know that pool would forever change our lives only 11 months later. Despite our circumstances, we did our best to add what we thought were layers of protection. On Thanksgiving 2015 our whole entire world came crashing down when our boys drowned in that very same pool we were so excited about having in our backyard. Leyton passed away 12 hours after the drowning and by some miracle, Jaxon survived. However, he never recovered from the injury to his brain due to lack of oxygen. In August 2019, only a week after being Certified as an ISR Instructor, Jaxon passed. While our story is heartbreaking, it has led me to fulfill a much bigger purpose than I could have ever imagined in honor of Jaxon and Leyton. My โ€˜whyโ€™ will forever be them.

With all that being said, although a lot believe it can not happen to their family, please know, the water does not discriminate because you are a good parent. Water safety should be just as important as securing your child in a vehicle. It should be the first โ€œsportโ€ they ever play. Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4.

๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ฆ

If you live in FL you are aware that we likely swim all year long, with that being said, there is no season for getting your little one safe in and around the water. My name is Christina and I teach survival swim lessons in West Boynton Beach. Children as young as 6 months old can learn to rollback and float until help arrives should there be an aquatic emergency. Once our children become mobile, they are at risk of drowning. Even the most vigilant parents can not possibly keep their eyes on their child(ren) 24/7. If you would like information about lessons and learn a little more about my โ€˜whyโ€™, please leave a comment, send a DM with your email address or reach me at:

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ Are you looking to get your little one safe around and in the water? ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Hi, I am a certified ISR instructor located in West Boynton Beach. I teach children ages 6 months to 6 years how to self rescue should they reach the water unnoticed. While many believe this could never happen to them, the reality is drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4.

My next session starts September 9th.

How it started vs. How itโ€™s going ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธ

A question I am often asked is, will my child cry during lessons?โ€ And my response is always the same, likely yes, especially in the beginning of lessons. Imagine being handed off to a stranger, in a large body of water and learning a new skill.

I can totally understand my students new and old and their tears.

At the start of my training to become an ISR instructor I remember my very first day. I had entered the water with my MI and after watching a few lessons I was able to get hands on with one of our students. I was full of many emotions, but I remember feeling mostly anxious. As the weeks passed, as I was learning, the anxiety little by little started to lessen. I was gaining confidence as I practiced and learned more, just as your little ones will.

During training, like my students, I never needed to hear, โ€œit is okayโ€ or โ€œyou are okayโ€. When I became overwhelmed with doubtful thoughts my family reassured me that I would and was an amazing instructor. They told me over and over again they were proud of me. Your little one is no different. You ARE their biggest cheerleader as they are learning and gaining confidence. Just as I found confidence in the many hours of learning and watching the progress being made by my students, they will too as their skills grow stronger.

Each day will continue get better!! There may be days even after the tears have stopped that they start again especially when introducing/learning a new skill, or during maintenance when skills have not been used. As an ISR parent I understand tears maybe hard but I promise the process is and will always be worth it. This is a life saving skill.

I had to DO. I had to EXPERIENCE. I had to have a history of my skills being SUCCESSFUL. We all learn by doing!

And even after training, skilling many children and years of experience, I am still anxious at the start of each session as it becomes โ€œnewโ€ all over again.

Final thought and please remember, you are your childโ€™s biggest fan, cheerleader and hype person ๐Ÿ‘
