Training with my teacher Kuroda Tetsuzan Sensei in Japan many years ago. Kuroda Sensei is truly exceptional.

Something to ponder when fear, confirmation bias and opinion become the order of the day.

Stay calm, implement your protocols, soldier on. This is called life and these are the times when you are tested, make sure you measure up to your principles with your actions. If you wish to walk the path of the Warrior, act like one. There are those who will need support and perhaps protection, be there for them. Be the calm in the midst of the Storm. Set the example, it is what we train to do.

I am teaching at the River of Life dojo in Fort Washington this weekend. An excellent group to work with.

Learning to cut from the draw in Iaijutsu we start with the sword out of the saya. This is practiced in our solo sword exercises and teaches us how to connect the sword to the center of the body. Doing this allows for rapid change of direction with the sword in multiple cuts. Later we learn to draw, cut, then displace and cut to prepare ourselves for practical application. These same movements are used in our jujutsu and tanto-jutsu. Our online dojo has in depth training videos to facilitate your practice.

This is excellent to remember and live by. If you don't speak French it says.
You should now
that nothing is sure,
nothing is easy
nothing is given
nothing is free

Everything is won,
everything is earned,
if nothing is sacrificed
nothing is obtained

Ancient Martial Art exercise, Clubbell Swings for Health, Aging and Function 02/10/2020

Training for aging, health, and function, is of importance to everyone. Here is another very valuable, and ancient, Martial Arts exercise that complements the Mace bar swings. While the Mace bar swings work on more of a lateral plane these Clubbell swings work on the vertical. I call exercises like this “anti-gravity” exercises. Start light and look for fluid movement and reps. Remember that avascular tissues need reps to strengthen. As you use more weight use the lighter Clubs to warm up. Another get benefit here is grip strength, very important for people who do not work with their hands.

Driving to the dojo this morning to teach. An exercise in energy management.

Aging, health and function is something that all of us are interested in. This is one of my favorite exercises, and an ancient one. Start by using a much lighter bar than the one I am using. For most men probably try 10-12 or 15 lb bar in the beginning. For example my 20lb bar I can do 150 reps plus. The 30lb bar that I am using is more that twice as difficult so right now 50-60 reps. A fluid and synergistic exercise from ancient warrior cultures.
