“I love our camps. They are my favorite part of the year. The only downside is when we have 200 people on the mat I never get as much time as I’d like visiting with, coaching, and talking to each friend, fellow student, and fellow coaches.
That’s why I came up with the idea. SBG hasn’t done a tropical retreat in more than 12-years. And because we are keeping this very small, I’ll have lots of time to work with each person individually.
Plus, I get out of the cold weather.
18-hours of personalized training, for 1000.
Once we hit our maximum, registration will be closed, so book your spot today here: sbgcamps.com
I look forward to seeing you there. This will be amazing. 🦍🙏🏻” - Matt Thornton

Happy New Year from SBG Bozeman!! 2023 was a year of incredible growth and learning for us. We moved into a new, larger space that required significant renovation but allowed us to accommodate for our growing tribe and exciting expansions. We hosted SBG Ladies Camp and SBG Fall Camp which required months of planning and preparation but were able to share our new facility with members of our SBG tribe from all over the world. The greatest blessing of 2023, by far, was bringing Baby Claire into the spinning world and the wild ride of parenthood. We are excited to be moving into 2024, welcoming challenges that may come with our goals set high. ⭐️ Cheers! Ricky, CeCe & Claire Davison

The Gorilla Cup is ONE WEEK away!! This event is incredibly important to the SBG tribe, as it is the biggest fundraiser for the Gorilla Booster Club, our nonprofit which helps support SBG members with expenses associated with competitions. In order for the Gorilla Cup to be successful we need more volunteers and competitors, especially if you have received GBC funds in the past or plan to in the future. This is a fun event and a great way to dip your toes into competing. Volunteers positions do not require previous experience!! We will share links to register to compete and to volunteer in our stories! We hope to see you there!

Only a few more days until the SBG Tribe descends on beautiful Bozeman, Montana and we can’t wait!! A couple of things to note:
We have created a WhatsApp group for camp attendees to connect for ride shares, to coordinate dinner/evening plans, and important announcements we may not wish to have posted on social media. The airport is about 20 minutes from the gym, so it may be helpful to connect with others arriving at similar times to share a ride.
If you arrive on Thursday and would like to train we have CAP class at 7 pm, followed by open roll and 5:30 am on Friday. All other regular Friday classes have been cancelled and Camp Open Mat will kick off 5 pm.
Once you arrive please see be sure to sign a waiver if you have never trained at SBG Bozeman before. If you attended Ladies Camp or have taken a class with us before, we probably have one on file for you but please double-check.
Montana weather is moody. The forecast calls for cool mornings & evenings with warm afternoons (well, warm to us 😜). We recommend being prepared for wind and rainy too, as fall weather can be rather unpredictable, especially if you plan on spending time outdoors.
Our gym remodel/construction is in the final stages but we do no have laundry or showers available. Please pack and plan accordingly, making sure you have clean training gear for each day. There is a laundromat nearby should you need it. We also ask that you bring a pair of clean, slip-on shoes for walking around the gym (especially in the restrooms!) and are sure to remove them prior to entering the mat space.
ATTENTION ALL BLACK BELTS ATTENDING CAMPS!!! 🥋 As an added bonus, this year’s Black Belt-Only Open Mat/Q&A will be taught by a surprise coach!! Make sure to attend this section on Friday, October 20th from 3-5 pm!! Any guesses who it might be?! Leave your guesses in the comments below!!
It wouldn’t be an SBG Camp without a section from the SBG OG, Aliveness Ape Matt Thornton! Coach Matt's sections always encourage the use of fundamental Jiu Jitsu techniques and often are accompanied by visual aids to help attendees understand the "why" behind the teaching methodology and how principles such as "The Performance Triangle" can be applied into one's everyday training.
Matt Thornton, founder and President of SBG, was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1991 and was part of the early group of Americans to become involved in the art. In 2001 he received his Black Belt from Chris Haueter and became the first BJJ Black Belt in the state of Oregon.
Over the decades Matt has worked with some of the best MMA fighters, grapplers and combat athletes in the world, including UFC hall of famers Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Forrest Griffin, and others. He has also produced Oregon’s first and so far only, Mundials world champion.
Matt travels to the various SBG locations throughout the world, as well as teaching at the SBG Headquarters in Portland, Oregon. In addition to teaching, Matt writes on various topics related to violence and skepticism and in 2023 released “The Gift of Violence” his book which provides the average person with all the knowledge they need to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of violence and to increase their chances of surviving a violent encounter.
“For many years Matt Thornton has been one of the most passionate ambassadors of the martial art of Jiu-Jitsu. His new book, The Gift of Violence, examines violence in the twenty-first century. Matt encourages his readers to apply lessons he has learned in Jiu-Jitsu to every aspect of their lives. Above all, The Gift of Violence makes it clear that Jiu-Jitsu is not just a sport; it is also a philosophy that makes one strong enough to forgive, and when necessary, confident enough to fight.”
—Rickson Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts legend
We have to give a shout-out to T.O. Leathercraft for the awesome custom door straps he made for the barn doors in our mat space!! He has also made killer keychains and bag tags for our members to represent SBG while out and about! T.O. Leathercraft is a small, Montana-owned business, the owner, Travis, is a Veteran and his family is part of our SBG tribe. The items he has made for us are just a tiny sample of the amazing products he makes, which include custom belts, knife sheaths and watch bands. We encourage you to check him out at .o.leathercraft or toleathercraft.com
SBG FALL CAMP SCHEDULE!!
SBG Camp is a one-of-a-kind experience, where martial arts students and coaches from all over the world come together for an incredible weekend of training and tribe-building.
Camp will kick off on Friday, October 20th, in the late afternoon, where SBG Bozeman will be hosting a GIANT open mat for all of the weekend's attendees. This Open Mat is an amazing opportunity to get in some rolls with your teammates from all over the world. The Open Mat typically runs about 2 hours.
Saturday morning starts with 8am MMA practice for all coaches, amateur, and professional fighters (aspiring amateur fighters can attend if given permission by their coach). The MMA practice will be run by Rory Singer, co-owner of SBG Athens, and one of the most important figures in Georgia's MMA history.
Saturday Jiu Jitsu will officially kick off around 9 am, where Adam Singer and Matt Thornton will each teach. Following these two sections, we break for lunch. After lunch, we will have another section in the afternoon. At the conclusion of the afternoon section, we will run another Open Mat for about an hour and the tribe will gather for dinner and social time.
Sunday kicks off around 8 for Open Roll, and follows Saturday's morning schedule, with Glyn Powditch & Ray Price each teaching a section before lunch. Following lunch, we'll have one final section taught by Paul Sharp in the afternoon before Camp concludes.
**Please note that this schedule is based on previous camps and is subject to change.
Coaches Adam & Rory Singer will be joining us all the way from in Georgia! The Singer brothers are co-owners of SBG Athens and have been Black Belts in Jiu Jitsu for 14 years They received their 4th degrees from Coach Matt Thornton last spring, making them the highest ranked BJJ Black Belts in Athens! Coach Adam will be teaching a Jiu Jitsu section at camp and Coach Rory will teach the MMA section. We can't wait to see what they bring to the table this year!!
Making good people dangerous to bad people! Coach Paul Sharp’s reputation precedes him as a fan favorite from previous camps and seminars! His sections are guaranteed to be fun and engaging (IYKYK - 2022’s human blob through SBG Idaho!! 😉) yet physically and mentally challenging. He will be joining us at SBG Fall Camp from 🦍 Coach Paul is a retired police officer with an impressive 22-year career in law enforcement. His extensive background includes diverse assignments such as patrol, SWAT, undercover narcotics detective, resident officer, and neighborhood response officer. He began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the ’90s and received his black belt on March 25, 2015. He has been recognized as an instructor in the Filipino Martial Arts and Jeet Kune Do Concepts. Paul has been coaching and training folks from all over the world since 1999 as a member of SBG International, the Shivworks Collective, and as a staff instructor at The Site Fi****ms and Tactics Training Center. Paul has had the opportunity to compete in MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, Judo, and Wrestling. These competitive experiences as well as real-life experiences have informed how and what he coaches.
