Supreme Sports Performance and Training

We love our SSPT t shirts and wear them with pride!!!

Powerlifting and strength training facility SSPT is the premier, private strength and conditioning facility for serious trainees in the Bozeman, Montana area.

We are minimalistic in our approach while specializing in powerlifting and strength training for individual/team sports. We primarily espouse free weights over machines and believe our trainees succeed in a training environment free of distractions like cell phones, and televisions. Furthermore, we are built upon the bedrock of consistency and effort utilizing the best strength tools.

Operating as usual

Top 10 photos (of hundreds) from our ~2,300 mile, 8-day getaway through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. โฃ
Our journey took us to Moab, UT where we started with a private jeep tour through Canyonlands National Park, followed by a hot air balloon ๐ŸŽˆride, and then we explored Arches National Park. Then it was a scenic drive through the breathtaking mountains ๐Ÿ” of Colorado with a pit stop in Fort Collins to get in some training ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ at and visit some of our PL family .907 & . We finished up in Jackson, Wyoming hiking through Grand Teton National Park. Huge thanks ๐Ÿ™ to & for the accommodations. โฃ
I feel blessed and grateful to live in a free country ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ with so much physical beauty where we can travel anywhere and explore anytime.

Sunday has traditionally been a rest day for me so it's nice to engage in another activity that adds value to my life. ๐Ÿ’ฏ The weights aren't going anywhere and tomorrow is a SBD day so today was all about enjoying the outdoors.โฃ
It's such a tremendous blessing ๐Ÿ™ to live in the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and specifically (aka Montana) where I can go to state-owned public land, blow-off some steam, and shoot safely and uninterrupted for a few hours. โฃ

I actually find many parallels between sport shooting (target practice) and powerlifting. Skill acquisition in the quest for technical mastery requires copious amounts of repetitious practice. Using a scope on a rifle is a lot like using RPE in that it allows us to zero-in on our target. I also appreciate the methodical, workmanlike approach required to achieve incremental improvement over time.

Piggybacking on my recap video, here are the stats ๐Ÿ“ˆ from all SSPT-coached lifters at 2022 USAPL Mega Nationals.

2022 USAPL Mega Nationals recap as well as some random thoughts on comparing totals, best lifter awards, protesting lifts, bucking IPF weight class traditions, and gratitude.

Sports are (mostly) about the contestants, the ones in the arena, those who play the game. But competition doesnโ€™t end there. As coaches, weโ€™re competing too. SSPTโ€™s priority is putting our athletes in the best position for them to succeed & achieve ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ goals. Helping someone do something theyโ€™ve never done before, hitting a new personal best (PB), is as thrilling as it gets. โฃ
and I are grateful ๐Ÿ™ to provide game day coaching services for powerlifters of ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ at ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€ of competition.โฃ
Our game planning & strategy calls are a ๐Ÿ”‘ component of our game day coaching process. This critical step is an opportunity for us to connect with the lifters, their coaches, and collaboratively ๐Ÿค install their competition game plan. โฃ
It doesnโ€™t stop there because SSPT leaves no stone unturned in our ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜ of personal records for our athletes. โฃ
We review training plans & video footage, analyze competition results ๐Ÿ“ˆ, scout the opposition, provide mentorship, recommend sports psychology techniques, discuss in-game scenarios, and ask lots of questions because the better we know our lifters, the better we can support them in the heat of battle.โฃ
Spectators only see the final product. They donโ€™t see the hours of preparation & labor poured into our craft that goes on behind-the-scenes. They miss the spotting/loading in the warm-up area, consoling a lifter after a miss, keeping them in the moment as the competition unfolds, advocating for them after a controversial call, nor the calculus taking place during final deadlifts. โฃ
We expect the best from our lifters because itโ€™s like them to execute & make most of their lifts. Likewise, our lifters expect us to provide
(Continued in the comments below ๐Ÿ‘‡) โฃ

SSPT delights in helping our athletes be the strongest versions of themselves both on and off the platform. Our business is personal records and powerlifting is our game. โฃ
Game day coaching is our passion ๐Ÿ”ฅ and what we do best. ๐Ÿ’ฏ That's why and I are delighted to step into the arena and onto the platform with ๐Ÿค these 14 lifters at 2022 Mega Nationals in Las Vegas.โฃ
All you can ever ask for is an opportunity and we are grateful ๐Ÿ™ to have one next week with each of these amazing people.

Beyond all the numbers, probability, and trends gleaned from extensive scouting, you'll eventually arrive at the most critical piece of game day coaching -- ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป. โฃ
SSPT employs a systematic, data-driven approach of attempt selection that maximizes the probability of our lifters Much like RPE, our methods function like a scope which allows us to zero-in on our target. โฃ
However, when you strip all that away, it ultimately comes down to having a keen eye and being able to determine how much your lifter has left in the tank. There's no magic formula or weird trick for that. It's a skill we've developed over time with the experience of watching thousands of attempts at every level of competition.

We know wishing someone "good luck" ๐Ÿ€ is a benevolent expression. It's just not our preference. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We intentionally choose to frame our well-wishes in a manner that empowers our lifters and puts them in the driver's seat rather than riding shotgun and hoping for the best outcome. โฃ
We believe details matter and coaches ought to choose their words carefully. โฃ

ย โฃ
Most of my powerlifting family don't realize I've also been a competitive ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ player since 2019.ย  While I've only played in one tournament, I've played over 1,000 games, was a member of the Washington DC Scrabble Club 171, and recently started a club in Bozeman, Montana. โฃ
ย โฃ
Believe it or not, Scrabble parallels powerlifting in a few ways.ย  The tiles are luck ๐Ÿ€ (lotย  #), the lexicon is knowledge (preparation & talent), andย anagrammatizingย is a skill (refined via training frequency & volume).ย  They're also strikingly different in that your next play depends upon your opponent because the tiles must intersect horizontally or vertically.ย  Moreover, there are tremendous strategies like maximizing hot spots (double & triple letter or word scores) as well as creating multiple words in a single play.ย  You can also intentionally play a word to block your opponent and close off the board when you suspect your opponent has a big play.ย  ย  ย  ย โฃ
ย โฃ
I achieved 2 lifetime personal bests today scoring 535-points with 4 bingos!ย  (A bingo is when you play all 7 tiles atย once.ย  You receive an additional 50-point bonus on top of what you score on the board.). The bingos were ๐—ฆ๐—ก๐—”๐—œ๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ก๐—š across two triple wordย scores (131-points), ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—œ๐——๐—˜๐—ฅ (63-points), ๐——๐—œ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฆ (78-points), and ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—–๐—˜๐—ก๐—ง๐—Ÿ๐—ฌ (64-points).ย  I was also very lucky to play both the Q & Z on triple letter scores with the words QI (31-points) & OOZE (33-points).ย  When you do the math, that's 400-points (75% of my total) in only 6 plays which means I only scored a paltry ๐Ÿ˜ฌ 135-points in the remainder of the game.ย ๐Ÿ˜ฉโฃ
When I started my powerlifting journey back in 1995, I used to joke ๐Ÿ˜ withย ย about one day surpassing hisย totals atย 90kgย and 100kg.ย  Suffice it to say, I now like my odds of beating him at Scrabble an awful lot better.ย ๐Ÿ˜โฃ
It's cliche' to say, but I've waited ๐Ÿ™ my entire life for this moment, and it feels pretty damn sweet.ย ๐Ÿคฉ I'd also be remiss if I didn't thank my darling wife ๐Ÿ˜ย , without whom none of this would be possible, because she was on the losing end of this utter annihilation.ย ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚โฃ
ย โฃ
Upward โฌ†๏ธ & onward โžก๏ธ.

Until a few years ago, single-lift specialists (aka one-lift wonders) would occasionally win high-level powerlifting competitions. They certainly werenโ€™t the norm, but you might see a deadlift specialist close the gap with their opening deadlift, only to storm back, then surprise everyone when they loaded it up for a huge third and went for the win. Even more uncommon were squat and bench specialists who possessed supreme talent to put the competition out of reach early.โฃ
Nowadays, the talent pool is too deep. Most elite powerlifters possess tremendous ability in at least two disciplines and arenโ€™t lousy in the third. Naturally, the best deadlifters hold the ace card because they have the final say but a ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ leaves no holes in your game and is difficult to overcome.

SSPT intentionally coaches our lifters to focus on ex*****on. ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—ฃ๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ง๐—ฌ is making all nine lifts. ๐Ÿ’ฏ โฃ
This rings most true when the competition is stacked at national or world championships and the ๐—ฃ๐—ฅ๐—œ๐— ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ฌ objective is winning. ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ† ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฌ kilo counts and more successful attempts lead to a bigger total. Bigger totals lead to higher placings. โฃ
All powerlifters want to reach their highest potential and lift weights theyโ€™ve never done before. As coaches, we want that for our lifters too. Ergo, if performance on the first two attempts suggests a personal record (PR) is available and likely, then weโ€™ll load it up and go for it! โฃ
We do ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง deliberately hold our lifters back ๐—จ๐—ก๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ฆ the competition unfolds in a manner that mandates that strategy.โฃ
Context is ๐Ÿ”‘. Understand your situation, plan, and react accordingly. For higher-level lifters, PRs or YOLO attempts ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™—๐™š the focus at local meets where the consequences for missing are less severe.

Huge thanks ๐Ÿ™ to and .usa for the shirts!

Happy birthday ๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚ to the most wonderful human Iโ€™ve ever known. โค๏ธ

I am proud to be an American and I โค๏ธ my country.โฃ
Happy Independence Day! I feel an overwhelming sense of blessing, gratitude, and pride for being born in and living in America. I hit the lottery along with so many others. I am free and never want to take that for granted. I appreciate the unselfish sacrifices of the many who have come before me and laid down their lives to protect those freedoms as well as the countless others who will come long after me to protect and pay those freedoms forward.โฃ
May you and yours feel the same sense of thankfulness today and everyday. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ I hope๐Ÿคžand pray ๐Ÿ™ that you can all do something today that adds value to your life with those who mean the most to you.โฃ
God bless you all and God bless the United States of America. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฏ
