It's time to get inverted! Join us this Saturday, December 3rd for a Handstand Workshop hosted by Instructor Gabby Lemire! In this 3 hour workshop, Gabby will breakdown the movements involved in effective handstanding. Gabby will cover techniques for safe entries, exits, body positions, biomechanics, spotting, and pressing. Participants will use the wall, various props, spotting to go wall free, and partner drills. Whether you are looking to up your freestanding handstand game or you are just beginning to find comfort upside down, you will take away many tools to integrate into your handstand practice.

About Gabby:
Gabby has a passion for movement. As a youth she competed and coached gymnastics. Since then, she has instructed people in hand balancing, contortion, acroyoga, partner acrobatics, cheerleading, and most other acrobatic disciplines she can get her hands on. She trained at the Underground Circus in Vancouver and completed the 2017 Pitch Catch Circus Training program. Over the years she has taught handstand, mobility, flexibility, and acroyoga workshops. In addition to her love for acrobatics, Gabby loves climbing, skiing, and recently began weightlifting.

Climbing is scary, there's no doubt about it. On Monday, December 5th, join us at 6pm at our Main Facility for a free presentation by local adventure coach Julia Yanker on how to overcome fear and anxiety while climbing. Many of us, at some point, will encounter a situation that throws us off our mental game - this might be a scary fall or an accident with more dire consequences. Afterwards, we may struggle with fear, anxiety, or other symptoms that keep us off the rock or ice. In this talk, Julia will cover techniques for working with fear and anxiety, as well as how to prevent these from getting in our way in the first place by applying psychological first aid after a scary incident.

Julia Yanker is an adventurer and Somatic Coach specializing in trauma resolution who has received 4 years of training in the technique of Somatic Experiencing®, a trauma resolution modality used around the world to help people heal from trauma. She lives in Bozeman with her husband, and jokes that she has participated in every adventure sport at least once…besides the ones that involve jumping off or out of things. When active, she can be found boating, horseback riding, camping, foraging, and skiing. However, resting is one of her favorite things too, as it lends itself well to napping, reading, introspection, journaling, and simply witnessing nature.

Our Main Facility will be closed on Thursday, November 24 in observance of Thanksgiving. The Main Facility will open on Friday, November 25th from 8am - 10pm.

Our Training Center location will be closed from Wednesday, November 23rd, through Friday, November 25th. Regular hours will resume on Saturday, November 26th!

The Training Center will be closed this week, Tuesday 11/15 - Saturday 11/19 as our Setting Team will be preparing it for a USA Climbing Youth Qualifying Event being held there on Saturday, 11/19. Normal hours for the TC will resume on Sunday, 11/20!

While the TC is closed, come on by our Main Facility and try some of the fresh boulders put up last week. In addition to the 64 Full Gravity Day problems set, the Setting Team set about 40 more routes last week for you to try!

We want to give a special shoutout to Laura Huggins and Bob Mechels! This past FGD was the 21st competition for Team Bob and Larry. These two have competed together at every FGD and Spring Fling for the past ten years. Our competitions wouldn't be the same without members like them!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Tim Gentry

I was born and raised in Portland, OR until I moved to Bozeman in 2017 for school. I grew up camping and bike touring with my family and so have loved the outdoors for my whole life. I started climbing at 15 through this local group that takes Portland-area high schoolers climbing outside, and I feel really lucky to have found that when I did. The group focused a lot on mountaineering, so I got to climb some of the Cascade volcanoes when I was in high school. When not outside I was pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering which I graduated with in 2020, and I’ve been in Bozeman ever since!

How long have you worked at Spire and what do you do here?
I've worked at Spire since last year, and I typically work the desk, instruct climbing and lead courses, and help with youth programs.

Favorite climbing discipline?
My favorite discipline has changed over the years and started as alpine climbing, but I have since realized that the best type of alpine climbing is single-pitch sport climbing. I still love to do longer routes on rock, and the experiences I’ve had with that have taken me to some pretty special places with some amazing people.

Favorite outdoor climbing area?
Squamish BC; nowhere else have I been able to hop on some world-class boulders, climb hard single pitch, do a mellow multi-pitch, and go to a brewpub all within the same day.

Other hobbies besides climbing?
I love skiing, bike-packing, and cooking, especially cooking up some fall soups.

Any goals in your climbing?
Even though right now I’m focused on pushing myself in sport climbing, I’ve always been inspired by big wall and alpine free climbing in incredible places like Yosemite, Zion, and Patagonia, and I ultimately want to try my hand at that at some point!

Our annual bouldering competition brings together our incredible community for a day of crushing plastic during the citizen's qualifying round, and an evening of high octane athleticism during the Finals competition. We do have a cap on the competitors this year, so if you would like to compete, make sure to register!

Designing Your Own Training Program with Coach Matt Lloyd

When: 4 Week Workshop - Tuesdays, November 8th - December 6th, 6-8pm (no session week of Thanksgiving)

Where: Training Center

Ever wanted your own tailored training program, but weren't sure where to start? In this 4-week workshop with Coach Matt Lloyd, climbers will gain an introduction to the elements of creating a successful custom workout program. Each of the weekly two-hour sessions will include both a workout and a classroom element that introduces athletes to training methodologies and programming principles.

The workouts will be catered toward climbing, but the programming philosophies have broader athletic applications. We’ll cover core training concepts such as specificity, variance, periodization, testing effectiveness, and avoiding injury. The goal of this workshop is for participants to leave with the basic knowledge of how to create an effective custom workout program for their unique goals and bodies.

We are very excited to announce the newest addition to our personal coaching services at Spire, Esther Smith DPT, Cert. MDT !

As a licensed Physical Therapist in Wyoming, Utah, and Montana, Esther has built an impressive career in physical therapy and athletic development. Studying at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Esther completed her Honors Bachelors degree in Exercise Science and subsequent Doctorate in Physical Therapy, before moving onto ventures specializing in injury recovery, and athletic coaching. Since 2015, Esther has owned and lead Grassroots Physical Therapy, where she practices her own style combining manual therapy, specific exercise, and strength and conditioning to help her clients return to high performance and resolve injuries. Our next 6-week Women’s Climbing Clinic starts next Wednesday, October 26th!

Running through December 7th, the Women’s Climbing Clinic is designed for beginner and intermediate climbers to help reach climbing goals, and meet other women in the gym. For two hours each night, this clinic is taught by experience women on our instructor team, and promises to give you greater community and climbing knowledge. Our first workshop of the fall is this Saturday, October 22nd! Join Randa Chehab for Foundational Yoga for Longevity and Strength from 1pm-4pm.

In this 3-hour workshop, Randa will draw from her 25 years of teaching and practicing yoga to help you safely explore foundational yoga poses. Particular attention will be spent examining the anatomy and functional movement of the hips and shoulders. This detailed examination of yoga poses will benefit all levels of practitioners for longevity in their yoga practice. You will learn how to build strength, hone functional movement patterns, and develop a deeper sense of awareness of your body.

About Randa:
Randa Chehab graduated from Smith college with a BA in Developmental Psychology, and a BA in medicine from UW-Madison as a Physician Assistant. She received her Masters in Global Health from Northwestern University. She is a long-time student and teacher of yoga, owning a studio in Bozeman MT from 2001-2017. She began yearly trips to India in 2006, and has taught internationally since 2009.

Join Excel PT's Dr. AJ Sobrilsky for a talk on common finger injuries in climbers. AJ will review diagnosis, treatment, and prevention/training strategies to help keep you climbing.

This presentation will be structured to provide a:

- Discussion of the most common finger injuries in climbing athletes

- Understanding of what signs and symptoms to be aware of and what they potentially mean

- Provide insight on various management and treatment strategies

5 years ago, the Spire community suffered
the devastating loss of Inge Perkins in an avalanche off of Imp Peak. Since then, a dedicated crew of people who loved Inge have combined forces to develop a scholarship fund in her memory.

The Inge Perkins Scholarship was established to
celebrate the life and inspiration of Inge by providing financial assistance to a young female rock climber living in the greater Gallatin Valley.

The scholarship seeks to provide an aspiring, young girl with opportunities to gain confidence through the physical, mental, and emotional growth that climbing nurtures. The goal is to develop not just stronger climbers, but community-minded volunteers and future mentors to inspire others.

Applications for the 2022/23 scholarship close on

Tomorrow, October 10th is Indigenous Peoples' Day. All of the land that we climb, ski, bike and recreate on locally around Bozeman are the ancestral lands of the Bitterroot Salish, Pend d'Oreille, Kootenai, Blackfeet, Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Chippewa Cree, Assiniboine, Gros Ventre, Dakota and other Indigenous nations.

Every year, Indigenous women and girls go missing in Montana, often never to be found. Native Americans make up 6.7% of the Montana population, yet account for 26% of the missing people's cases. One of the most tangible and effective ways to support Native communities in Montana is by directly supporting families and community members searching for their loved ones.

On this Indigenous Peoples' Day, please consider a donation to the Snowbird Fund to help families find their loved ones. We will have a donation box located at our front desk, and we will be matching up to $250 in donations. If you do not have cash on you, donations can be made through our front desk as well.
