You know, I’ve joked for years that as a structural engineer, I just punch numbers into a calculator and call it a day!
But with AI now able to run calculations faster (and sometimes better) than we can… it does make me wonder, where does that leave us?
Is engineering just math? Or is it the judgment behind the math?
Because the real value of a licensed professional isn’t just solving equations, it’s knowing which equations matter, when assumptions break down, how materials behave in the real world, and when something “looks right” on paper but feels off in practice.
There’s also the responsibility side: stamping a design means standing behind it with your name, your experience, and your accountability.
AI can learn patterns. It can even mimic decision-making. But can it truly replicate the intuition built from years of field experience, mistakes, and lessons learned?
Curious what others think:
Are we heading toward a shift in what expertise means, or is the “human element” more valuable than ever?

Hello Everybody,
In recent times, construction has been crazy, what with material prices shooting up and construction trades having long lead times. One of those trades, pre-engineered metal plated wood trusses, have seen some extraordinary lead times, with some companies being out a full year!
Clients have turned to me asking for an alternative to roof trusses, suggesting "conventional frame". Most of the general public understand roof construction of this manner, with rafters and joists and beams, etc. etc. But here in SW Florida, the "continuous load path" concept (i.e. everything is connected together and tied down) falls apart. At each and every joint in the roof system, some type of connector is required to hold everything together. With the high, high wind loads in the area, typical, "off-the-shelf" connections don't work anymore!
Case in point: This 3+ Million Dollar home in Placida, FL was constructed with a "conventional frame" style roof system. When Hurricane Ian came through, the roof came clean off the house!!
Moral of the story: We're not in Kansas anymore Toto, don't cut corners in construction just to save some time! When using conventional frame, custom connections have to be designed where off-the-shelf hardware doesn't work. (translation : even more time and more money). It's best to stick with a tried and true strong roof construction method: wood trusses!

Summer's upon us, and you know what that means? "Hurricane Season" 🙄...I know, I know, not really something to look forward to at all, but this year it'll actually feel about normal...right?😳

We at Carotti Engineering would like to wish Everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year !
An acquaintance of mine recently wanted to know why Engineers take so many vacations. "...What!?!..." was my first reaction, but after that moment I responded that Engineers, like Doctors, Lawyers, Real Estate Professionals etc., have to stay current in their respective fields and take what are called "Continuing Education" classes. For engineers, that's 30 hours per renewal cycle. We take the time to better ourselves, so that we are better able to serve you, the general public. (Vacations...pff..I wish...)
