When people hear the words somatic healing, they often picture someone crying, shaking, or having a huge emotional release.
And yes that can happen.
But that's not what somatic work is really about.
At its core, somatic healing is about learning to listen.
Your body has its own language, its own timing, and its own intelligence. Every nervous system, every story, and every healing journey is different.
There isn't a formula where point A always leads to point B.
One of the biggest shifts in my work has been understanding this:
The body doesn't need to be forced into change. It needs to feel safe enough to choose it.
So instead of trying to "fix" the body, we slow down.
We stay with the tissue a little longer.
We listen instead of overpowering.
We create the conditions where the nervous system can settle and the body can reveal what it's been holding.
Sometimes that looks like emotion.
Sometimes it's subtle.
Sometimes nothing dramatic happens at all.
Because healing isn't measured by how intense the experience is. It's measured by how deeply the body begins to trust.
When the body feels heard, it often knows exactly what to do.
That is the heart of Daniel James Wicker's approach to somatic fascial work and why no two healing journeys ever look the same.

Sometimes the greatest teacher is your own healing journey.
In my recent conversation with Daniel James Wicker, he shared something that really stayed with me.
"There was a season where life completely slowed down. Instead of pushing forward, I turned inward."
He began untangling years of physical pain, childhood experiences, and the patterns his nervous system had been carrying for so long. It wasn't easy. It wasn't linear but it changed everything.
Daniel describes it like this: learning to hear the quiet intelligence of the body while his own pain was blaring like a fire alarm.
And yet, because he kept listening...
The noise slowly became quieter.
His sensitivity became sharper.
His body became more resilient.
When he returned to his practice, something had shifted.
The same hands but a deeper presence.
The same skills but a greater capacity to guide others.
Sometimes our struggles aren't taking us away from our purpose.
They're quietly preparing us for it.
Healing doesn't just transform the way you feel.
It transforms the way you show up for the people around you.

In my conversation with Daniel, we talked about those moments when someone suddenly cries, opens up, or feels something shift inside of them...because something finally felt safe enough to come forward.
We spend so much time trying to think our way through healing. Analyse it. Name it. Understand it.
But the body is communicating too.
And if you're guiding other people through their healing, your own inner work matters.
Your ability to stay present with grief, anger, shame, or discomfort matters.
You are your first client.
This is something we explore deeply in my Thrive Coach Certification and through experiences like Activate Your Inner Healer.
The tools are important, but so is the person holding them.

“I’ve worked on this for 30 years. I’ve seen therapists. I’ve seen pastors. I’ve done it all.”
In this conversation, Daniel James Wicker shares with Erin a powerful moment from his somatic work with a client.
After years of working with her body structurally, it wasn’t deeper pressure or more force that created the breakthrough.
It was gentleness.
It was safety.
She began to cry and said, “I don’t know why… I just feel safe. I’m going to let this go.”
And the place in her body that had resisted for years began to open.

As a yogi, I wasn't quite sure what I was walking into.
The first time I found myself at St. Pete Calisthenics, I remember watching everyone move and thinking...
"What is this?"
It looked like martial arts. It looked like yoga. It looked like gymnastics. But there was something incredibly fluid and beautiful about it.
When Aaron shared his story on the podcast, it made so much sense.
He didn't come to movement through flashy tricks or social media fitness.
He came through rehabilitation.
Working with clients in pain, he discovered that simple calisthenics movements helped decompress the spine, strengthen the rotator cuff, and create stability where people needed it most. The results were so powerful that he kept diving deeper until he eventually became certified in Animal Flow and built St. Pete Calisthenics around that philosophy.
A body with resilient shoulders, a stable spine, fluid movement and a nervous system that feels safe enough to explore.
As someone who has spent years teaching yoga therapy, I deeply appreciate that approach. Because when we restore balance in the body, we often notice something else shift too.
We feel more grounded.
More confident.
More at home in ourselves.
If you've never explored Animal Flow or calisthenics before, this conversation might completely change the way you think about movement.

What I appreciated most about this conversation was being reminded that our bodies are incredibly intelligent.
Aaron's background in rehabilitation, injury prevention, and movement mirrors so much of what I've learned through yoga therapy. We both believe that when we stop treating the body like a machine to push and start listening to it as a system that's constantly communicating, everything changes.
Movement becomes less about burning calories...and more about building a life you can keep living.
If you've ever felt intimidated by fitness or disconnected from your body, this conversation is for you.

Sometimes our minds and bodies are carrying too many “open tabs”- old patterns, emotions, fears, and protective responses that once had a purpose.
Through coaching, we learn to gently look at what’s underneath the resistance, the self-sabotage, the overwhelm, and the places where we feel stuck, not with judgment, but with curiosity and compassion.
This is the heart of the work we explore in Thrive Coach School ✨
