“Letting them struggle (a little) is hard”
Your kid is trying to do something independently—tie shoes, make a snack, clean up a spill—and it’s taking forever. You could do it in 10 seconds… but you also want them to learn.
A phrase that helps in the moment: “I won’t do it for you, but I won’t leave you alone with it.” You can coach one step, then let them take the next. “Show me your first try.” “What’s your plan?” “Do you want a hint or more time?” It keeps you supportive without taking over.
And when they finish, celebrate the process: “You stuck with it.” That’s the root of real responsibility—effort, follow-through, and ownership.
Question: What’s one thing you’re working on letting your child do more independently—even if it’s slower and messier right now?
