Hip mobility — both internal and external rotation — are super important in jiu jitsu. The more mobility you have, the greater your arsenal of techniques you can apply with effect. Even outside of jiu jitsu, poor hip mobility can cause downstream effects like lower back pain. Here’s a partner drill (though you can modify with resistance bands if you don’t have a partner) that you can do daily to improve your hip range of motion.

Thank you to Dr. Brumfield at Brumfield Chiropractic for the information and for being a Gold Sponsor of Grapple.

Go pay him a visit — you’ll thank us later!

The Arm Triangle is a classic submission, and for good reason! But sometimes you may be working we harder than you need to for it. When you try to apply this submission with your head/neck muscles, it takes so much more effort (and doesn’t do any favors for your neck!). But when you focus on distributing all your weight onto the shoulder — just “sagging” down into it — and then finishing with your chest, it’s so much less effort. No squeeze necessary. Use your connection and distribute your weight in the right place, and you will find a clean strangle! And keeping this neutral posture will save your neck!

PROTECT YA NECK. Whether you get a stinger from a training session, or you just accumulate mileage from training for a long period of time, our cervical spine takes a lot of compression in grappling, and the effects of this are compounded by our societal tendencies to sit a lot and look down at screens. Acute injury like stingers can cause mobility limitations temporarily, but long term compression can cause things like migraines (which is what I’ve experienced).

Here, Dr. Brumfield demonstrates some simple home remedies for decompressing the nerves in your cervical spine. Give it a shot, and give him a call and tell him thank you when it helps you feel better!

Thank you to Brumfield Chiropractic for being a Gold Sponsor of Grapple! They are second to none if you’re looking for prehab or rehab therapies!

Grapple Jiu Jitsu is opening early bird pricing for 2027. Lock in a full calendar year of unlimited training — all classes, all levels, adults and kids — for $999. That’s about $83/mo, versus our standard $129/mo.

Six-month option: $649, covering January through June 2027.

New members only: add the rest of 2026 for $149 when you buy one of the 2027 deals and start training this week instead of waiting for January.

Grappling can be very physically demanding and hard on the body overtime, and that’s why staying on top of your mobility is so so important. The more you invest into your mobility bank, the more longevity you can have on the mats and the more you can reduce your risk of injury. We always love when Dr. Brumfield comes by and imparts wisdom like this! Go see Dr. Brumfield and get your pre-rehab going! But whatever you do, don’t park in his spot. 😂

One option when escaping knee on belly is to enter into Backside 50/50 — remember, when you escape a lower body dominant pin like this, the counter attack will be at your partner’s lower body. Counter attacking when you escape is always a good idea, as we interrupt our partner’s rhythm. Whoever feels and controls the rhythm usually wins the match.
