On the latest episode of our podcast "A Minute with Coach Riggs", we discussed the #10 TRM football team of all time-the 1946 squad. One of the key members of that team was Scotty Byrne. His son Brad joined that episode and told the amazing story of his dad's life. Scotty lied about his age so he could join the service to fight in World War II. He served in North Africa and Italy as a 17 and 18 year old where he was awarded three bronze stars for heroic effort and a purple heart for being wounded. Scotty returned to Brewton in August of 1945 and finished his last two years of high school at T.R. Miller. He was a gifted football, basketball, and baseball athlete for the Tigers. After graduation, he married his favorite Miller cheerleader, Ida Bradley. He learned to fly, taught school to ex-servicemen and pitched semi pro baseball. In the 1950s, he attended Mississippi Southern where he excelled in baseball and became the school's #1 golfer. Scotty eventually returned to Brewton where he settled down with his wife and two sons, Chippy and Brad. He ran for sheriff in 1958 and in a close election defeated Sheriff Otis Emmons. He would serve six terms as Escambia County Sheriff. In 1971 he became the first person to be inducted into the Southern Mississippi Athletic Hall of Fame in two sports. In his retirement, he would hunt, fish and always play golf. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 92.

Here are some photos of the life of the amazing Scotty Byrne. And check out the latest episode of 'A Minute with Coach Riggs" for more about the 1946 Miller football team and Scotty Byrne.
