Last night, parents and fans were treated to an amazing playoff game, as your Knights took on Grosse Pointe South in the HS quarterfinals. Though not the ending we hoped for (4-1L), our girls still performed beyond all expectations. They took, arguably one of the best teams in the league, deep into the third period, with the Knights leading 1-0. Senior Goalie Vera Pietila (Hartland)....put on a goalie clinic, she played amazing and carried the team. Senior All-State Honorable Mention Center Karli Richards (Hartland) and Senior forward Sabina Paison (Howell) skated to exhaustion. In an incredible display, Senior Lexi Shattuck and Sophomore Anna Young (both Hartland) played over 12 minutes on defense continuously due to being shorthanded. Our freshman through Junior players, skated equally as hard, and gave us much to be excited about in the future, from Freshman Evie Clark (Brighton) bullpen work in net to the welcomed grit of Freshman Isabella Kim (Brighton), It was an amazing display of grit and endurance. We have so much to be proud of as our ladies never quit. In the end, our girls were simply too fatigued to hold off a late surge by GPS, and we lost 4-1. However, to all that were there, the loss was only in points, not in performance. Our ladies exceeded all expectations and personified what Girls High School Hockey is all about. Playoffs are an amazing time in hockey, and one that is not replicated readily in other sports. It was a game to remember and our ladies can all hold their heads high. They set an example for many young girls watching to follow. They carried on a tradition that our alumni set for them. Amazing ladies...you played simply amazing....and we are all immensely proud.

What is your win? Is it about the points on a scoreboard? Or is it about the self accolades for the coach? Is it about how many goals you score or how many mercies you can tally? Is it being able to taunt a team because you are victor and scored more points?

This is an important question, because it defines a program. We want to win just as much as anyone else. That fire burns deep to be competitive, but we will not compromise what we stand for. Yes, we hear some of the clubs talk about how much better their program is than high school. I, as the head coach, would call that view nearsighted.

High School sports are different, competitive absolutely, but different. Our athletes are more than a score at the end of the game. As a rule, we will not be beholden to personal accolades, because the team is so much more than the accomplishments of the individual. It has to be, because as a coach and as father of daughters, this program had to be something different. The multisport athlete, the experienced player, the beginner....we provide a home for each of those players. Our win...is not reflected in a score, its reflected in the courage of our players to take a different road, or in many cases of our alumni, a return to the sport they love, driven out by bad experiences in the past.

High School Hockey provides opportunities for more than just a sport, there is so much more. So as we near the end of our season, and many of you are getting ready to get into the crazy season of hockey, know that there is a different path. Where the win...is about more than individual statistics or points on a scoreboard. There are many programs and high school coaches that want more for your daugther. Seeing your daughter excel in school and in life....that's the bigger win that we strive for.
