A healthy loft starts with prevention. Today we're working through our young bird Salmonella (Paratyphoid) vaccination routine. All young birds are vaccinated with salmonella vaccine 4 weeks after there first PMV / Rotavirus vaccine. This is a critical step in ensuring our racers have the gut health and immunity needed for the long haul. We vaccinate every bird on property in the off-season (late fall) to ensure full immunity before the stress of breeding begins. This way you birds have 3 -4 vaccinations in their first year. Do you vaccinate for Salmonella annually, or only if you see an issue in the loft?

Exciting news happening at J&B Lofts!!! Due to a generous donation, We will be rehabbing a previous flyers small but well constructed loft. The loft became available due to health reasons and J & B Lofts was excited to take on the project. We will be unloading the trailer tomorrow and getting it set up facing South. More to come.

Upgrading young bird loft.
This loft was moved to J&B Lofts and required some renovations to get back to flying shape. Take a look at the layout and watch for videos of upgrades.

Securing the loft was a priority upon my late arrival home to protect the young birds from nocturnal predators. The drop trap was closed to prevent any potential threats. The birds' health and alertness are notable. Tomorrow, the focus will be on loft scraping and cleaning as part of regular maintenance.

Grading the Way
A premier racing loft requires more than just top-tier birds; it needs the right infrastructure. With the heavy rains and wet weather over the last several days, the farm road to the lofts was washed out and very muddy. Today we're spreading and grading the stone roadway to ensure easy access for feed deliveries, daily chores and training tosses. 44 yards of reclaimed stone were delivered to the lofts roadway. The work never stops at J&B Lofts. How do you handle your loft maintenance?

Protection starts before the first toss. At J&B Lofts, we prioritize a strict vaccination schedule for PMV, Rota, Salmonella and Pox to give our youngsters the best shot at a long racing career. We typically vaccinate after weaning to allow their immune systems to settle. Then we follow up with booster shot 4-6 weeks after initial vaccination. Today the last round of young bird racers were weaned and received PMV / ROTA combo vaccine along with POX vaccine. What's your 'must-have' vaccines before the race season starts?

The race doesn't end at the trap. To ensure our birds bounce back for next week's toss, we use a post-race recovery mix focusing on electrolytes , bcaa, fats and protein. This helps repair muscle tissue and rehydrate after a long day on the course. What's your must-have supplement for tired birds?
