Tricep and Shoulder Circuit

This was conducted as the upper body focus after a barbell squat and hack squat super set.

Conduct this upper body circuit for 3-4 sets for a good pump:

Mind over Matter Mondays - "Use it or lose it"

I have stated before the mind is a gift, but also realize that the mind allows other gifts to be fostered through learning. Everyone has a learning process that is particular to them. The more you practice your learning process, the better you will be at it. Likewise, the vice versa is true. The less you carry out the skill of learning, overtime the harder it becomes to tap into that process quickly and efficiently. For many people, the skill of learning itself is not like riding a bike and can be very fustrating. The ability to learn is like a muscle that must be exercised; especially when one is out of their area of comfort. For my ball players, being able to see a move and replicate it is so important because that is the first step towards being able to form your own unique toolbox or bag of moves with your style. For my fitness folks, being able to see good form and replicate it is important for properly executing a lift to maxmize its benefits and avoid injury.

Why not improve your ability to learn "how to learn" through fitness and sports? Yes, health, wellness, and competition are all important to me, but being in tune with how i learn helps me when learning other things that are totally unrelated.

With respect to motor skills, there are three stages of learning: cognitive, associative, and autonomous. Cognitive is when you know what to do, you just can't consistenly perform it. Associative is when you can replicate what you have seen pretty well and consistently when focused. Autonomous is when you understand the assignment; you not only know what to do, how to do it, but you understand its purpose and can innovate and create around the skill making it your own. For fitness training, people strive for associative, while athletes strive for autonomous for sports specific skills.

In this video we have a mobility warm-up that opens up the hips, activates the quads and core as well as fires up the hamstrings in preparation for Barbell Squats.

Conduct each segment as prescribed in the video.

A breakdown of Kettlebell technique. Kettlebells are great for training hip extension and explosiveness. It mimics the mechanics of running, rebounding, repetitive jumping, tackling and more. It can also be used for general fitness to build hamstring and glute strength.

I am not a Russian kettlebell purist. I keep my technique generalized and specific to sports and fitness functionality. All i care about is the stress we add to the body, the stimulus that will translate to the activity in practices, games, or improving other compound lifts.

Some key points:

Toes forward or slightly out to promote glute activation. Feet at shoulder-width or slightly outside shoulder-width apart. Slightly bent knees.

In movement, tip shoulders over knees and hips, allow kettlebell to be under your torso, without using your arms to raise the weight, power your hips forward to cause the forward motion of the kettlebell. Treat your body like a spring or pendulum and repeat the activity taking advantage of the conversion of eccentric load to concentric load.
