Our redheads are distinguishing themselves. A year ago Clifford won the best horse award at Pony Club camp and his name was inscribed in a perpetual trophy. This year Blue’s name was inscribed just below it. These chestnut geldings are being so very good. They couldn’t be happier than they are in their new careers with their own doting girls and Bennett Camp-Crowder’s excellent management and training. Lucky horses, lucky girls.

A wonderful update on our Teddy (True Dat), who is on lease in Virginia:

“Thank you so much for this fabulous opportunity on such a talented, kind horse. He is a joy.”

Our friend Bennett checked in on him and reported, “He is just happy as can be with two friends and getting groomed for hours every day just being spoiled.”

Every horse deserves this kind of “retirement” and his brothers, Clifford and Blue, also have their own perfect, teenaged-years situations with Bennett. 🩷

DNA extracted from a horse tooth found at the 16th-century Spanish settlement of Puerto Real has revealed a remarkable link to the wild horses of Assateague Island. Genetic analysis shows the colonial animal’s closest living relatives are the feral herds roaming this Atlantic coastline.

The discovery strongly supports the theory that Assateague’s horses descend from Spanish colonial stock brought to the Caribbean during early European expansion. Horses were central to Spain’s influence in the Americas, reshaping travel, warfare, and agriculture.

This genetic connection ties a modern coastal herd directly to the Age of Exploration, proving that colonial history survives not only in ruins and archives, but in living animals still moving across the landscape.
