At Down Under, we’re proud to be teacher-led and teacher-focused. That means investing in teachers as educators, leaders, and community builders, not just in the 60 minutes at the front of the room 🌟 Behind every class is thoughtful planning, continued learning, relationship-building, and a genuine commitment to helping students feel seen, supported, and connected.

You’ll notice there’s very little footage from inside class. That’s by design. Our studios are phone-free spaces, which means many of the moments that matter most — the breakthroughs, the conversations, the laughter, the collective exhale — happen away from the camera.

This or That: Hot Power Flow & Hot Power Pilates teacher edition ❤️‍🔥 Welcome Mena Fenwick to Down Under!

Mena brings a spirit of curiosity, humility, and self-study to everything she teaches. Her classes balance thoughtful sequencing, accessible instruction, and the belief that yoga can be both a grounding practice and a space for discovery 🫶🌈

That perspective is informed by her work beyond the studio as well. A graduate of Wellesley College, where she studied education and psychology, Mena is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Education while teaching middle school mathematics ☀️🧮 Her commitment to educational equity, particularly supporting students with disabilities and fostering more inclusive learning environments, shows up in the care, clarity, and accessibility she brings to her classes.

✨ Whether she’s encouraging students to embrace a challenge, find support in a prop, or simply meet themselves where they are, Mena creates a welcoming environment where every student can learn, grow, and belong.

Students often believe that if they “can’t” do arm balances, it means they’re not strong enough. While strength is certainly involved when supporting your bodyweight with your arms, it’s only one piece of the puzzle 🧩✨

The other ingredients? Anatomical understanding, proprioception and coordination, proper alignment and muscle recruitment, and perhaps most importantly, like Dr. Didi von Deck explains here, the willingness to work through uncertainty one attempt at a time.

Sthira Bhaga, often translated as “sublime steadiness,” is the Sanskrit name for the Advanced A series of Ashtanga Yoga: a practice that explores the relationship between strength, focus, balance, and ease 🙏

🤸‍♀️ Arm balances aren’t reserved for a select few. They are skills that can be learned, refined, and developed through consistent practice and intelligent instruction.

Early in Down Under’s 20 year adventure, we decided to only work with outstanding teachers who play nicely in the sandbox with others 🤝🩵✨ We don’t hire divas, drama, gossip or performance acts but surround ourselves with those who are serious about developing their craft, walk the talk through life and bring a level of authenticity that then changes us forever from their imprint.

🦋 No one epitomizes authenticity more than the young man who walked in our doors more than five years ago 🎉 Bendex Stevenson first a student, then Studio Manager, then 300 Hour Teacher Training graduate, then full-time teacher, supporting family and colleagues throughout his classic Down Under story.

We love you Bendex! Thank you for all you have given your fellow teachers and managers and students. Our community will miss you and we’ll always have a mat waiting for when you come back to visit XOXOXO ✨🙏❤️‍🔥

Many of us arrive on the mat carrying the same habits we bring everywhere else: striving, comparing, performing, measuring. We look for proof that we’re progressing. That we’re doing it right 🏔️ But joy doesn’t usually show up when we’re trying to earn it.

For decades, Eoin has championed a practice rooted in play, connection, curiosity, and wonder. His teaching is a reminder that yoga can be both profound and lighthearted, and the most meaningful breakthroughs happen when we stop taking ourselves quite so seriously.

A little Pilates plot twist for your day: lighter springs on the reformer aren’t always easier 💡 In fact, reducing spring tension can make an exercise significantly more challenging because your body has less support to work with. More support isn’t always less work, and less support isn’t always easier 🙏

NEWCOMER ➡️ TEACHER 🌈✨ When Adam first walked through our doors, he signed up for the Newcomer Special and dove right in, taking nearly 20 classes in his first month.

What drew him to Down Under was the opportunity to explore different class styles and different teaching approaches, all under one roof. But beyond the variety of classes, he found something even more meaningful: a space where he could show up as his authentic self 🌟

A few years later, Adam completed his 200 Hour Teacher Training with Down Under and now teaches within the very community where he began 🫶 His hope is simple: that no matter your gender, sexuality, experience level, or background, you can find a practice that feels nourishing and a community that feels welcoming.
