“Only hardness or only softness creates an inability to deal effectively with the fluctuations of life.”

A few days ago, a friend with a deep interest in yoga casually mentioned that Thursday, July 10th marked Guru Parampara Day—a time dedicated to honoring the lineage of wisdom passed down from teacher to student. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and offer heartfelt gratitude to the mentors who’ve shaped not only our skills but our character and values.
That instantly struck a chord. This same spirit of respect and reverence is deeply woven into the fabric of karate. Every bow in the dojo, each kata we perform, and every correction we receive from our sensei—these are all quiet tributes to the masters who came before us. Karate isn’t merely a martial art for self-defense; it’s a philosophy, a way of life built upon humility, discipline, and the sacred transmission of knowledge across generations.
In every class, even as our practices evolve from the original teachings, we continue to pay homage to the Senseis who paved the way—explicitly to Senseis Urban, Merenda, and Gonzalez, who are no longer with us, and implicitly to all those mentors whose dedication and wisdom helped us become who we are today.

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved Shihan Vincent Merenda on January 2, 2025. He left this world while on his way home from the Zen Goju Temple, our Dojo, a place where his spirit will forever reside. Shihan Merenda was the beating heart of the Zen Goju Temple—a guiding light, mentor, and cherished friend to all who entered our doors. His unwavering dedication, wisdom, and boundless generosity touched the lives of so many, leaving an indelible mark on our Dojo and in our hearts.
Through his leadership, Shihan Merenda taught us far more than martial arts. He instilled in us the values of respect, discipline, camaraderie, and perseverance. He believed deeply in the power of Goju Karate to transform lives, to bring us together, and to inspire personal growth. His legacy will continue to guide and uplift us as we honor his memory in our training and in our lives.
Shihan Merenda’s teachings will live on in every kata we perform, every lesson we share, and every moment we strive to embody the principles he held so dear. We will carry forward his vision, practicing with the same dedication, heart, and love that he so passionately imparted to us. Rest in peace, Shihan—you will always be with us. Oss!
