The Columbia Central Girl's Varsity Soccer team went on the road last night to Eaton Rapids to face Cascades Conference foe Michigan Center for the third time this season in district semi-final action. During the regular season, the Golden Eagles edged the Cardinals twice in tight games by scores of 1-0 and 2-0, both of which could have easily gone the other way so the stage was set for an epic battle and that was exactly what unfolded. Michigan Center held an edge in the first half, putting a lot of pressure on the Columbia defense, but goalkeeper Kolie Brown stood strong making several key saves and the Columbia defense bent but would not break. In the second half the Golden Eagles pushed a bit more on the Cardinal defense but couldn't find a goal and the game ended tied at 0 in regulation.
In the first overtime, Michigan Center would finally break through and score to take the lead and things looked grim, but Columbia would not go down easily and minutes later senior captain Peyton Huston got on the end of a pass from junior captain Mara Henry and found the equalizer. The two teams would go back and forth through the second overtime but neither could find a game winner so the game went to penalty kicks.
In the shoot-out, senior goalkeeper Kolie Brown made two big saves but the Cardinals led 1-0 until junior Sienna Williams fired a perfect shot past the Michigan Center keeper to tie it up. One more great save by Brown put the Golden Eagles in position to win the game and advance in the state tournament and senior captain Emma Shafer stepped to the line and got the game winner despite a valiant save effort by the Cardinal keeper.
"Coming into this game we knew it was going to be tough." Said Columbia coach Andy Hosmer. "Michigan Center is athletic, fast, and well coached. Playing anyone three times in one season is difficult, and to have to do that in an elimination game is a tall task. Both teams left everything they had out there tonight and I'm proud of all the players on both sides. Penalty kicks is a tough way to decide who "wins" a game like this, and as happy as I am for us I'm equally sad for them. This was one of the most epic battles I've been a part of and I couldn't be more proud of our effort tonight."
Columbia Central improves to 13-7 on the season and advances to the district final against host Eaton Rapids on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
