The was proposed in 1898 and was originally called “Bridge No. 3” before being renamed the Manhattan Bridge in 1902. Foundations for the bridge’s suspension towers were completed in 1904, followed by the anchorages in 1907 and the towers in 1908. The Manhattan Bridge opened to traffic on December 31, 1909, and began carrying streetcars in 1912 and New York City Subway trains in 1915. The eastern upper-deck roadway was installed in 1922. After streetcars stopped running in 1929, the western upper roadway was finished two years later. The uneven weight of subway trains crossing the Manhattan Bridge caused it to tilt to one side, necessitating an extensive reconstruction between 1982 and 2004.

The is a in the rain shadow of the southern mountains and Transverse Ranges in the Southwestern United States. Named after the indigenous people, it is located primarily in southeastern California and southwestern , with small portions extending into and .

During the Paleozoic era, the area that is now the Mojave was again likely submerged under a greater sea. The passive margin switched to active margin in the early-to-mid Mesozoic when the Farallon Plate under the Pacific Ocean started to dive below the North American Plate, initiating a subduction zone; volcanoes and uplifting mountains were produced as a result. Erosion over many millions of years formed a relatively featureless plain.

The oldest rocks in the area that now includes National Park are extensively metamorphosed by intense heat and pressure and are at least 1700 million years old. These rocks were intruded by a mass of granite 1400 Ma (million years ago) and later uplifted and exposed to nearly 500 million years of erosion.

The 3.5 mile walkway Newport Cliff Walk in Rhode Island dates back to 1663, when the charter granted by King Charles II promised Rhode Island colonists the right to fish along the shoreline. This right of public access to the shore was later guaranteed in the Rhode Island state constitution.

The coastline remained undeveloped until around 1880, when owners of the Gilded Age mansions started building a simple path along the coast, in sections. Over the decades, many disputes have erupted between landowners and the public about access to the walk, with wealthy owners sometimes erecting fences, boulders, or walls along the route.

The provides views of The Breakers, Marble House, Rough Point, and other prominent mansions from the Gilded Age as well as views into the Bay.

Iona is an island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of . It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island. Iona Abbey was a centre of Gaelic monasticism for three centuries and is today known for its relative tranquility and natural environment. It is a tourist destination and a place for spiritual retreats. Its modern Scottish Gaelic name means “Iona of (Saint) Columba” (formerly anglicised as “Icolmkill”).

Iona’s resident population is about 180. In March 1980, the Hugh Fraser Foundation donated much of the main island (and its off-lying islands) to the current owner, the National Trust for Scotland. The abbey and some church buildings are owned by the Iona Cathedral Trust.
One publication, describing the religious significance of the island, says that the island is “known as the birthplace of Celtic Christianity in Scotland,” and notes that “St Columba came here in the year 563 to establish the Abbey, which still stands”.

county is presumed to have been named after Catherine of Braganza, since she was queen of England at the time (she was Portugal’s royal princess Catarina, daughter of King John IV of Portugal). The county was founded alongside ( , which was named after her husband, II), and ( , named after his illegitimate son, the 1st Duke of Richmond). However, the namesake is disputed. While Catherine’s title seems the most likely namesake, no historical evidence of official declaration has been found. On October 7, 1691, all counties in the Colony of were redefined. Queens gained North and South Brother Islands as well as Huletts Island (today known as Rikers Island). On December 3, 1768, Queens gained other islands in Long Island Sound that were not already assigned to a county but that did not abut on Westchester County (today’s County).
