THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED TO A WORLD TITLE

Some champions arrive early and loud. Others take the long way — one such fighter is Elton "The Bull" Dharry, a mainstay of the famed Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, NY.

He turned professional 22 years ago, in 2004, and over the course of a well-traveled career, he racked up 30 wins aside 6 defeats, including a WBA interim world title fight against Andrew Moloney in 2019.

But he kept fighting. And he kept winning. He captured WBA Gold at super flyweight in 2024, and brick by brick, put himself in position to not only fight for the IBO world title at super bantamweight, but to do so in front of adoring friends and family in his native Guyana.

On April 25, 2026, at the Pegasus Suites in Georgetown, the 40-year-old Dharry stepped in with an undefeated rival 18 years his junior, 22-year-old Salmin Kassim with the then-vacant IBO Super Bantamweight World Championship on the line.

What's more? It was the first men's world title-fight ever held on Guyanese soil.

And twelve rounds later, a new Super Bantamweight king was crowned — Dharry won by unanimous decision by scores of 117-109 (2x) and 118-109.

The moment belonged to Dharry, and to Guyana as well. In fact, President Irfaan Ali was there to witness history, and awarded the championship belt to Dharry personally.

It made Dharry just the eighth Guyenese boxer ever to win a world title.

Remarkable? Yes. But not as remarkable as how he arrived at his crowning moment. Losses didn't end the journey. Nor did the years, or the missed opportunities.

In the most unlikely of circumstances, "The Bull" rose to the occasion, becoming a world champion at age 40 on home soil in front of his countrymen and women.
