Exciting news for PS 889, PS 130, and PS 139 families!
Beginning next year, our Dance Explorers After-School Program will take place onsite at PS 889 on Tuesdays and Thursdays—and, if Tuesdays at Urbane Arts Club fill, we’ll also open a Wednesday section there.
This is a program for kids who enjoy trying on different dance styles, being part of a creative team, and who love to perform. It’s for kids who love our camps and classes and want more—as well as for kids who love to dance but prefer a more relaxed way to participate than traditional studio offerings provide.
This year, Dance Explorers students have experimented with creative movement and improvisation, hip hop and street jazz, ballet, modern dance, salsa, Egyptian folk dance, and classical Chinese dance. For each unit, they constructed their own sets, props, and costume pieces, then learned choreography to share on the Main Stages of Flatbush Frolic and the Church Ave Street Fair.
Kids ages 8+ also represented ALDEN MOVES in the 20th Annual NYC Dance Parade, and this weekend, we’ll be performing and teaching a short dance lesson at PS 130’s World Culture Day!
The event is free and open to everyone. It all starts at 12 PM—join us!

Making movement dance and making dance move--on stage and in the classroom!
Get your dancer out of the mirror, off the marley, and away from scrolling.
Our Upstate Dance Intensives in Accord, NY offer a one-of-a-kind experience designed to nurture creativity, connection, and technique—all in wide-open spaces that invite dancers to breathe in art, soak up inspiration, and expand their artistic horizons.
Day spots are still available for dancers ready to shake off the usual confines of the studio and adventure into movement in nature preserves, sculpture parks, and our beautiful upstate campus.

It’s a pretty incredible thing to dance through the streets of New York City with the city itself as your backdrop—what a gift has given dancers and spectators for the last 20 years!
Thrilled to have been part of the community, color, and celebration—and to share that experience with students each year.
Many thanks to everyone who worked to pull it all together, our incredibly dedicated parade contingent of faculty, students, friends, and family, and all of you who came out to see the dancing.
May we always hunger for adventures that pull communities together and celebrate the creativity, talent, and dedication within them ❤️❤️
Had the best time during our May 1st After Hours event for studio parents! There’s something here for everyone, and After Hours offers parents a chance to enjoy live music by pianist Misha Filimon while catching up with studio teachers and staff.
The fall class schedule is now live, and pre-registration for current students begins May 15. Schedule your Parent/Teacher Conference before the end of May to learn more about offerings and placement for your dancer. 🩰🎩👟
It was a gorgeous day in the neighborhood for last Sunday’s Church Ave Street Fair!
Many, many thanks to the BID and everyone who makes this event so special each year. We were thrilled to showcase students from our Church Ave dance studio and Dance Explorers After-School Program alongside our professional company.
Bravo to the dancers on a fantastic show, and thanks to all who came out to cheer them on.

Meet Katie! Born and raised in Florida, Katie Garrepy is a performer at heart and an ever-evolving artist. She began dancing in Brooksville, FL at the age of seven and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance performance & choreography from Florida State University (FSU). She has taught students all throughout the state of Florida ranging in ages from three to 22, teaching masterclasses and being invited to guest residencies. Katie has continued to enrich her artistry by auditioning for and attending summer intensives by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and taking class at Steps on Broadway. Recently a New York City local, Katie has taken the leap to continue and broaden her professional dance career after dancing professionally in Florida since graduating college.
In addition to dancing, Katie is also a skilled painter, artist and illustrator and is honored to share her artistic talents as our new After-School and Summer Program Coordinator.
We're thrilled to have her onboard and very much hope you'll come by to welcome her in person during our After-Hours event for parents this Friday, May 1st from 8-10pm!
So excited for this weekend’s Church Ave Street Fair! Look forward to bouncy houses, fun food, and something special from all your favorite Church Ave businesses!
Adventure into dance on the Main Stage from 3:30–4:00 PM to catch a performance featuring our professional company, our PS 889, PS 130, and PS 139 Dance Explorers, a cross-section of dancers from our Church Ave studio, and of course, a chance for the audience to jump in and be part of the fun.
Be sure to stop by our table outside the studio for an insider’s scoop on what’s available this spring, this summer, and for the 2026–27 school year.
Bonus for dancers already registered for summer camps and intensives: our Summer Camp Meet & Greet will take place at the studio following the Main Stage performance.
The Church Ave Street Fair runs 12–6 PM, rain or shine, and the Main Stage is located at the intersection of E 10th St and Church Ave. In the event of rain, the performance will move indoors—so come by the studio!
What’s the difference between a “good” class and a “bad” class? A strong foundation.
If you're having good days and bad days dance-wise, it’s often because there’s a crack in your foundation. It might be one that’s always been there but hasn’t shown itself until you started leveling up—or one that develops when you advance quickly enough to need more concentrated foundational work to maintain balance.
And balance is exactly what Dr. David Sofer worked on with us in last month’s Dancer’s Toolbox Workshop.
Balance is achieved when your center of gravity is aligned over your base of support. The ability to find—or reestablish—balance is key to leaping ahead. During his workshop, our dancers learned exercises to identify limiting movement patterns and expand their base of support—leading to higher extensions, more consistent turns, and a new group of Ballet III-B dancers ready to go en pointe!
Dr. Dave, thank you for helping our dancers leap ahead, and dancers who were there, what was your biggest takeaway? Comment below!
Something new has landed in …
Our Cadillac has arrived—try it out when you book a Sunday or Monday private Pilates session! In addition to having its own repertoire of exercises, the Cadillac makes mat work more accessible for those who have difficulty getting on and off the floor.
Fun fact: Director Alden LaPaglia trained under the direct tutelage of Pilates protégé Romana Kryzanowska and her daughter, Sari Santo. Certified in 2002, she’s been teaching all ages and abilities for over 20 years.
We’ve also just begun a new Sleeping Beauty Performance Workshop series for toddlers through kids ages 9+, and it’s not too late to register. Join us this spring!
