Despite weighing 40 tons and being the size of a school bus, the humpback whale can roll and bank in tighter underwater circles than almost any other large marine animal.

Biomechanics researchers Dr. Frank Fish and Stephen Dewar discovered the secret lies in the row of large, irregular bumps — called “tubercles” — lining the front leading edge of the whale’s 16-foot pectoral flippers.

When tested in naval wind tunnels by Canadian engineering company WhalePower, those leading-edge bumps defied conventional aerodynamic wisdom.

Instead of disrupting airflow, the scalloped bumps channel wind through the troughs into pairs of tight, counter-rotating micro-vortices that keep air glued to the back of the wing at steep 40% higher angles without stalling.

Applied to wind turbine rotors, industrial ventilation fans, and aircraft wings, the biomimetic tubercle edge cuts drag by up to 32%, quietens blade noise, and allows wind turbines to capture 20% more electricity in gusty or slow winds.
