🐂 On This Day in Texas History – May 27, 1870
The Kansas Daily Commonwealth made the earliest known printed reference to the Chisholm Trail, the now-legendary cattle route that helped shape Texas and the American West.
The Chisholm Trail wasn’t a fixed road but a network of paths stretching from South Texas through Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma) and into Kansas. After the Civil War, Texas ranchers were sitting on millions of longhorn cattle—but there was little money to be made selling them locally. Northern markets, however, were paying top dollar.
Named after trader Jesse Chisholm, who originally blazed parts of the route for wagons and trade—not cattle—the trail became the backbone of a booming cattle drive era. Between 1867 and the early 1880s, millions of Texas longhorns were herded up this trail to railheads in Abilene, Ellsworth, and Dodge City, where they were loaded onto trains bound for eastern cities.
DID YOU KNOW?
What made May 27, 1870, noteworthy was that the trail entered the written record—cementing its place in both history and legend. The article described cattlemen bringing “vast herds from Texas along the Chisholm Trail,” an indication of just how central Texas was to the postwar economy and cowboy culture.
The Chisholm Trail played a massive role in turning the Texas cowboy into an American icon, and it helped Texas recover economically after the Civil War. Today, remnants of the trail are preserved in museums, landmarks, and lore—but it was on May 27, 1870, that the world first read its name.
