RICKY CANTON — BETTER AT 39 THAN HE WAS AT 21?
Rodeo is supposed to be a young man's game. Apparently nobody bothered to tell Ricky Canton.
In 1987, Canton was the hot young cowboy. He became PRCA Rookie of the Year. And that same year he won Cheyenne Frontier Days—something no other tie-down roping rookie has duplicated.
Then came the miles. The calves. The horses. The injuries. The National Finals. Year after year after year.
Most athletes approaching 40 are talking about what they used to be able to do. Ricky Canton was about to do something he'd never done before. In July 2005, just weeks before his 40th birthday, Canton backed into the box at Strathmore, Alberta. And 6.3 seconds later, he owned the world record. And 21 years later, the PRCA record book still has Ricky Canton's name beside 6.3 seconds.
But here's the part we love. The next day he won Cheyenne Frontier Days again. The same rodeo he'd won as a rookie 18 years earlier. Think about that career arc.
At one end: Rookie of the Year + Cheyenne Champion. At the other: World Record + Cheyenne Champion.
And there were 15 trips to the National Finals Rodeo in between.
Maybe Ricky Canton's greatest talent wasn't simply being fast. His Hall of Fame biography points out something that serious ropers will appreciate: He could win on all kinds of horses, including horses he'd never ridden before. That's horsemanship. That's adaptability. And that's longevity.
Lots of cowboys are fast when they're young. Ricky Canton was fast for a generation. And on one afternoon, knocking on the door of 40...he was faster than anybody had ever been.

The PRCA Calf Roping Standings are full of familiar faces, too! 🤠⭐️

We’re incredibly proud of these guys and always grateful for the ones who take time out of their busy schedules to come rope with us. It makes it even more special getting to cheer them on throughout the year and watch their hard work pay off on the biggest stages!

We’ll be rooting for you all the way to Vegas — and we hope to see plenty of those familiar faces back in Bryan, Texas, in February! 🤠⭐️

We’re so proud to see so many familiar names among the WPRA World Standings — ladies who have supported and competed at the Seth Broesche Memorial over the years. We’re incredibly grateful to each of you who has taken the time to rope with us, and we love getting to cheer you on throughout the year!

Finish strong, ladies! We’ll be rooting for you all the way to Fort Worth! 💪🏽⭐️

UPDATE: she ended up selling 3X and brought $4650 when it was all said and done! 🥹 We are soooo incredibly thankful for all parties responsible for this huge contribution to help make Seth’s Memorial weekend what it is! Without YOU, we don’t get to honor him and serve the people this Memorial was brought to life for.

We all know Seth was a cowboy, through and through. 🤎

From roping anything that had legs, to catching hogs, penning cattle, and spending countless hours in the alleys of sale barns all over the area—he loved every bit of it. He ate it. He slept it. He breathed it. And he did it all from the time he was just a little boy riding that black-and-white pony.

We are so incredibly proud of the young man Seth was. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone and everyone, whenever/wherever he could. That was simply who he was.

We are also incredibly grateful to Herman Wheaton and family, along with Hank Herrmann and Caldwell Livestock Commission, for generously donating a heifer to be sold next Wednesday, August 26th.

All proceeds from the sale of this heifer will benefit Seth’s Memorial. Through the Memorial, held the first weekend in February each year, we are able to provide scholarships to high school rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, help families in need, award prizes in all four events, and add money to the payouts. Every single dollar raised goes right back into the Memorial and the people it was created to serve. It is all put to good use—supporting these kids and contestants, helping families, making the Memorial possible, and honoring Seth in a way we know he would be proud of.
