6 Recruiting Tips for Rising Juniors before June 15th

For current sophomores, June 15th is the official start to the college recruiting process, where college coaches can begin actively recruiting you and engaging in conversations.

Aspiring College Rowers who are proactive are at an advantage because they can control the narrative, adjust course if need be, and have time to truly develop relationships with college coaches.

The recruiting journey is a long one. And it is important to not let the emotion of recruiting to take control of your process.

These 6 TIPS FOR CURRENT SOPHOMORES are here to help you officially jump in at the start date, own your process, while also reducing anxiety and pressure long term.

Remember, just because recruiting “opens” June 15th of this year, it does not mean you are required to make your decision June 16th…

In fact, for many, you probably won’t be making your decision until after June 15th NEXT YEAR…

It’s that long. And that’s ok!

That lengthy time horizon gives you a chance to do it the right way and feel in total control of the journey from start to finish.

You’ll be educated, you’ll have exposure, and you’ll have ample time to develop and GET FASTER ON YOUR 2K.

All with the intention of hopefully enjoying the journey of trying to find the perfect fit for your next four years.

Immerse yourself in COLLEGE ROWING these next TWO weekends! It’s championship racing season!

If you’re an aspiring college rower, THIS is the time to dive deep into your top teams and track their performances.

One of the best ways to educate yourself on the college rowing landscape, and learn about the trajectory of a program, is by following race results when teams are at their best.

And when IRA or NCAA Championships are on the line, everyone is at their best.

Dad Vails this weekend with over a dozen men’s programs competing for an IRA bid.

The SEC championships featuring absolute contenders on the women’s side.

Ivy League Champs and Eastern Sprints with some of the top of the top next week.

And many other championships all around the country. It’s a good time to embrace the highs of our sport.

Be a student of rowing and see how these teams stack up with one another, then visualize how you may be able to contribute in a few years.

June 15th is right around the corner for rising juniors, and it’s valuable to know how teams stand on their most important dates of the year. Take advantage of this time to immerse yourself in college rowing at its best.

And with that, good luck to all the athletes competing for greatness this weekend and next!

“WE TRY TO ESTABLISH AN ENVIRONMENT HERE WHERE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE INEVITABLE”

Absolutely incredible conversation with Beau Hoopman, 2004 Olympic Champion and Head Coach for the University of Wisconsin Men’s Rowing Program (), diving into the 150 years of Wisconsin rowing, their success with of developing walk-ons, and how they’ve built a culture around doing more with less and putting in the work!

In this episode we talk about…

*Beau’s journey from never hearing about rowing until Wisconsin orientation, walking on, showing up every day, then leading to a career as a two-time Olympic medalist.

*Wisconsin rowing, and building a culture centered around doing the work, building toughness, and testing limits on and off the water to make 2000 meters feel easy.

*The value of finding fast novices who can push the recruited athletes, and why every athlete’s goal should be to make the 1V8 and pursue a championship.

Having spent a summer in Madison out with Beau and Wisconsin in 2017, I can tell you these guys put in the work, and this is one of the best environments to train in.

I highly encourage anyone who is interested in Division 1 rowing in a legendary training atmosphere to give this one a listen!

May means Championship Racing Season.

Stakes are on the line in May, and that’s the best place to be.

Whether you’re a high school rower prepping for regional, City, or State champs, or a college rower taking advantage of the next few weeks to dial in for the conference championships…

This month is all about intention. Both on and off the water.

Intention in your daily routine.

Intention in your practice ex*****on.

Intention in your preparation ahead of two-day regattas.

Intention in your schoolwork with finals, APs, or end of year assignments.

Intention in your sleep and recovery to stay fully healthy.

Intention in your social life and priorities off the water.

And intention in so much more.

When we are deliberate and structured with our intention, we can take control of chaotic periods of training, racing, and most importantly, school, and continue to keep the focus on what matters most.

It may mean sacrifices in the short term. A little bit of FOMO when we shift our priorities and say “no” more than we are used to.

But that’s what we signed up for.

If we anticipate it, and plan for it, and get the easy stuff right with routine and recovery, we can accomplish far more, while maintaining balance, than we otherwise could.

And come June, it will all be worth it.

Keep moving forward.

P.S. For any athletes competing at the Philadelphia City Champs this weekend on the Schuylkill River, stop by the ATT Tent and let’s catch up! It’s gonna be a fun weekend of racing!

“IF THEY’RE EXCITED ABOUT WHAT I’M COACHING, THEY’RE GOING TO PULL HARDER”

Amazing conversation with Kumari Lewis, Head Coach for the University of Alabama women’s rowing program (), as we dive into her first year as coach, helping create another SEC power in college rowing, and what it takes to compete at the D1 level!

Kumari is a blast to talk to as we lock in on…

*The leap she made from Philly and Penn, to joining Alabama and a world class athletic department, as a first time head coach.

*The difference in resources and support at Alabama versus other programs, particularly with fully funded scholarship opportunities and athlete perks.

*The commitment D1 rowers make to training, performance, and being an athlete both on and off the water, in pursuit of creating an NCAA qualifying culture.

I highly encourage aspiring college rowers, and parents, who are interested in D1 rowing at the top level, and SEC level competitiveness, to give this one a listen!

“WE’RE AT A POINT NOW WHERE THE FINALISTS IN THE 3RD VARSITY AT THE D1 LEVEL AND THE FINALISTS IN THE D3 GRAND FINAL ARE THE SAME SPEED.”

Incredible conversation with Gary Caldwell, retired Commissioner of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, as we dive into everything IRA Rowing, the trends in men’s rowing, and the future sustainability of varsity programs.

With over 25 years leading the IRA, retiring in 2024, Gary provides a wealth of stories and insights as we cover…

*The start to the present day IRA, with the formation of the association, to the removal of club participation and freshman events, and more.

*The limited scholarship opportunities, the growth of Division 3, the need for exposure to be comparable to the success in NCAA rowing.

The college sports landscape is evolving faster than ever before, and Gary shares some very insightful thoughts on how programs can effectively handle the new age of college rowing.

How to add in On-Your-Own Training for 2K Success.

Too often, the spring season becomes a time of year where high school programs completely disconnect from erg training, and focus entirely on water practices and race prep.

For aspiring college rowers who are trying to take advantage of their peak fitness and get new 2K PR’s for college coaches…

This can be a problem when they sit down to test because they have NOT been on the erg consistent enough to maintain confidence.

This is why in-season erg training can be incredibly beneficial for athletes who want to take advantage of the limited 2K opportunities they have left this spring.

And if your team doesn’t prioritize incorporating erging (their focus is on racing and team success, and that should be their only goal)…

How can YOU take matters into your own hands and keep building the fitness and confidence on the erg to set you up for success on that next 2K.

Below are 5 ways to get to work and set yourself up for success…

1. Full “OYO” Sessions

2. Practicing Stacking

3. Weekend Warrior

4. Hybrid Workout

5. Micro Sessions

It’s not your coaches job to make 2K testing and college recruiting the primary focus…

It’s up to you to balance success with your team, while carving out additional training centered solely on your own goals.

And it’s WAY more possible than you think. In fact, it should be something you WANT to do.

Take advantage of these next few weeks of racing, and keep moving forward.

DM if you need help adding erg training and 2K preparation into your training schedule!

Earn It. Every Day.

The spring racing season is a marathon. But it’s also an opportunity for us to experiment.

Athletes compete week after week, with each race presenting new challenges to overcome, while also striving to evolve into the best version of ourselves when it matters most.

If we sprint too early… we’re burnt come the most important races of the season.

If we are too patient… the competition will be lengths ahead of us come May.

You need that perfect balance.

Consistent forward progress, a resiliency to adversity… but also a bit of “recklessness” that allows you to breakthrough your limits and travel to places you’ve never seen before.

The “recklessness” is about ex*****on. It’s about attitude.

Aggressiveness off the line. Attacking new rates. Grabbing 1-2 more splits in your base speed. Whatever it is that can get you that edge.

You experiment with it in practice. You realize it on race day.

Don’t get me wrong. Your fitness will evolve if you continue training. Your tech can still be refined as you figure out cohesion with your teammates.

But at this stage those become mostly marginal gains.

The real breakthroughs come from attacking each piece, pushing the status quo, and trying to get one more step closer to your capacity with each day.

Make that your challenge heading into the second half of spring. And when it matters most, you will realize it was worth it.

Keep Steppin’ Into It.
