September might be one of the most overlooked months to fly fish the Smoky Mountains.

The kids are back in school, summer vacation crowds have thinned out, and the mountains are starting to get that first hint of fall.

For anglers, that means less fishing pressure and some excellent opportunities on the streams throughout Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Terrestrials are still important, cooler nights are starting to change things, and we’re getting closer to one of our favorite times of year for big brown trout.
