Buffalo Bills HOT START… But There’s UNFINISHED BUSINESS!
The Buffalo Bills are 2-0, the offense is rolling, and the Joe Brady era couldn't have asked for a much better start — but this team still has plenty to clean up.
On this episode of Mafia Talk with Jae & Big Cuz, we're breaking down what we're LOVING about Buffalo through the first two weeks, what has us concerned, and what needs to improve as the Bills prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Buffalo opened the season with a 36-31 road victory over the Houston Texans before beating the Detroit Lions 41-31 in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium. Joe Brady is also the first head coach in Bills history to begin his tenure 2-0.
BILLS ARE 2-0! — How impressed should Bills Mafia be with this hot start?
Josh Allen is COOKING — Through two games, Allen has thrown for 582 yards, 5 touchdowns and ZERO interceptions, while also doing major damage with his legs. Against Detroit alone, he accounted for five touchdowns — three passing and two rushing.
Joe Brady & Pete Carmichael Connection — Brady and Carmichael previously coached together in New Orleans in 2017 and 2018, and now Carmichael is Brady's offensive coordinator in Buffalo. Carmichael brings decades of NFL experience, including his long run working alongside Sean Payton and Drew Brees. How much is having an experienced offensive mind like Carmichael helping Brady make the transition from offensive coordinator to head coach?
Is Brady able to be more of a HEAD COACH now? — Brady talked during the offseason about giving Carmichael and QB coach Bo Hardegree a bigger voice with Josh Allen, allowing Brady to spend more time with other position groups and the defense. Through two weeks, that arrangement is certainly worth discussing.
This Bills offense looks DANGEROUS — Buffalo scored 36 against Houston and 41 against Detroit, including touchdowns on five of its first six possessions against the Lions. What are Jae & Big Cuz loving most about this offense?
Jim Leonhard's new defense — growing pains or legitimate concern? — Buffalo has given up 31 points in BOTH games. Leonhard brought a significant schematic change to Buffalo, including a 3-4 base and an emphasis on becoming a more attacking defense. There have been flashes, but there are still things that need to be cleaned up.
What's going on with Christian Benford? — Benford has been one of Buffalo's best defensive players in recent seasons, but his transition into Leonhard's new defense is something we're watching closely after some early struggles. Leonhard specifically identified Benford during the offseason as a player he wanted to build around, so how does Buffalo get its top corner completely comfortable in this new scheme? Benford has 13 tackles and two passes defended through two games.
What we're LOVING vs. what CONCERNS us — Buffalo is undefeated and scoring points in bunches, but is this team playing complete football yet? Which problems are normal early-season growing pains, and which ones could become bigger issues against the AFC's top teams?
NEXT UP: LOS ANGELES CHARGERS — The Bills return home for Week 3 on Sunday, September 27 at 1:00 PM ET against the Chargers at Highmark Stadium. What matchups should Buffalo be looking to exploit, and can the Bills keep the hot start going and move to 3-0?
 HOT START… UNFINISHED BUSINESS!
Jae & Big Cuz are talking about the GOOD, the BAD and everything in between. The Bills are 2-0 and there's plenty to love — but nobody is handing out trophies in September. The ultimate goal is still out there.
