Fencing develops discipline, balance, coordination, and sportsmanship. We invite children, teens and John's, Columbia University and many more.
Introduction to Fencing
The sport of fencing is a uniquely classic sport. It has history, drama, romance, style, art, plus all the advantages of an active physically demanding sport. Mentally it is mind consuming, allowing not a moment's break. Fencing is also fast and athletic, a far cry from the choreographed bouts you see on film or on the stage. Instead of swinging from a chandelier or leaping
from balconies, you will see two fencers performing an intense dance on a six foot-by-40 foot strip. The movement is so fast the touches are scored electrically - more like Star Wars than Errol Flynn. IFA's program is designed to provide an introduction for your child to one of the most fascinating, exciting and safest sports. Nickel City Fencing Club
Fencing develops discipline, balance, coordination, and sportsmanship. Fencing helps youths develop quicker reflexes and an ability to make lighting fast analyses of tactical situations. Since the first national youth tournament held in 1985, the youth of America have changed the face of American Fencing. College coaches are now recruiting American fencers with years of experience as opposed to searching the freshman ranks during registration for the tallest most athletic looking people. Our club has helped place countless students into the best universities in the country - Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Georgetown, Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, St. Our fencing program has developed a very large foundation for IFA's pyramid of fencers, the apex of which cannot be higher than the base is wide, meaning the wider the base the higher we can reach. Large fencing programs are appearing across the United States as an alternative to the all-time favorite team sports. There is no predetermined method to pre-select great fencers so all fencers must be given equal chance and attention. Children develop at different mental, emotional and physical rates and their goals change accordingly. There are those who exhibit no talent during their first four or five years of fencing and then become dynamite competitors, while others may show the competitive spark from the first day. Benefits of Fencing
There are many benefits to participating in youth fencing. Children learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. They learn to compete independently as well as for a team; they learn to enjoy winning and profit from defeat, while becoming physically fit and healthy; and, most importantly, they learn to make complex decisions, analyze problems, and think fast. These ideals help children reach their potential in many areas other than fencing. Remember that the primary motivating factor for entering sports, particularly among adolescents, is the desire to have fun. The following pages will help you assist them in reaching this goal. Don't forget, Olympic Champions have fun too. The Role of Fencing Parents
Parents provide support and encouragement. Most importantly, they are positive role models of good sportsmanship and respect--showing respect to coaches, officials, and opponents. Providing consistency is also very important. Get your child to the club to practice regularly. A consistent training curriculum--private instruction, group instruction, and open bouting-- is necessary to realize the benefits of fencing. Use school holidays to maximize training opportunities at camps and clinics. Keep in contact with the coaches to assess your child's progress and to determine readiness for competitions then start fencing at local events. At competitions don't focus on wins and losses; rather, praise good technique, strategy, and good sportsmanship. Winning will follow naturally. Competitions are great places to meet other fencers and parents. Enjoy the full experience of competitions by taking advantage of all the opportunities for personal and athletic growth.

A Jewish family Karnofsky, who immigrated from Lithuania to the United States, took pity on the 7-year-old boy and brought him to their home.
There he stayed and spent the night in this Jewish family home, where for the first time in his life he was treated with kindness and tenderness.
When he went to bed, Mrs Karnovski sang him Russian lullabies, which he sang with her.
Later he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs.
Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family.
Mr. Karnofsky gave him money to buy his first musical instrument, as was the custom in Jewish families.
Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions such as St. James's Hospital and Go Down Moses.
The little boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family, who adopted him in 1907. And proudly spoke Yiddish fluently.
In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore the Star of David and said that in this family he learned "to live a real life and determination."
This little boy's name was Louis Armstrong. This little boy was called Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish and “Satchmo” is Yiddish for “big cheeks, a nickname some say was given to him by Mrs. Karnofsky!
