Practical self-defense for adults, teens and kids through devastatingly effective martial arts system of Wing Chun Kung Fu—plus Tai Chi & Beyond for adults 50+. Martial Arts school teaching the deeper meanings of martial arts (seniors, men, women, kids ages 5 and up). For us, martial arts / kung fu is a life practice for seeking more from ourselves in all areas of our lives. We use the vehicle of martial arts / self-defense as a philosophy for success and efficiency in our lives. Improvement is a physical, mental and emotional transformation of viewing fighting is not a combative struggle, but a meditative harmony with pressure / energy in order to learn how to flow and then use it to our advantage. Training includes Gung Fu / Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do concepts, Old-School Boxing / Classical Pugilism, Hand Fencing, Tai Chi, Qigong / Chi Kung.

Last week, someone in the Palm Coast Moms group asked:

“Should kids be taught to hit back when a bully hits them first? That’s what I teach my son.”

The post received more than 250 responses.

The overwhelming majority of parents agreed that children should defend themselves.

But nearly everyone focused on whether children should be allowed to fight back.

Almost no one asked the more important question:

**Do they actually know how?**

Telling a child to “hit back,” “finish the fight” or “stand up for yourself” is not the same as preparing them to protect themselves—especially against a bigger, stronger bully.

Some parents said their children were already learning self-defense through martial arts. But simply participating in a martial art doesn’t automatically mean a child is being prepared for the reality of physical bullying.

There is a major difference between competing in a sport under rules and protecting yourself when someone suddenly pushes, grabs, corners or hits you.

Real bullying doesn’t begin with two children standing at a safe distance.

There’s no referee.

No protective equipment.

And no warning to get ready.

Most physical confrontations begin suddenly and at close range—often before a child even realizes a fight has started.

Some martial arts depend on having enough distance and space to kick, leaving children unprepared when a bully gets too close.

Others train children to wrestle and roll around on the ground with their attacker. But the last place you want your child in a real self-defense situation is on the ground.

The goal of self-defense isn’t to score points or win a match.

The goal is to stop the immediate threat and get to safety.

That’s where Wing Chun is different.

Wing Chun was specifically designed for direct, close-range self-defense. It teaches children how to respond from the position they’re already in, protect themselves while striking back, maintain their balance and take control of a realistic situation.

At The Dragon Institute, we also teach children that self-defense begins before the first punch.

It includes awareness, confident body language, strong verbal boundaries and knowing when to walk away.

But when someone puts their hands on them and walking away is no longer an option, we make sure they have more than permission to fight back.

We make sure they have the ability to protect themselves.

Parents deserve to understand exactly what their child is—and isn’t—being prepared to handle.

We don’t train children to start fights.

We train them so they aren’t helpless when someone else does.

I recently had the opportunity to teach Tai Chi and Qigong to the Parkinson’s community here in Flagler/Palm Coast.

And one of the things I wanted everyone to understand from the beginning was this:

Tai Chi is simple. But simple doesn’t mean easy.

The movements are slow. They’re gentle. And they can be adapted to what each person is capable of doing.

But when you really practice Tai Chi, you aren’t just moving your arms and legs.

You’re paying attention.

You’re concentrating on your balance. Your posture. Your breathing. Where your weight is. How you’re moving.

In other words, you’re connecting your mind to your body.

And that was probably my favorite part of the experience — looking around the room and seeing so many people completely engaged in what they were doing.

Some were standing. Some adapted the movements to their own abilities. But everyone was training the same thing:

Moving on purpose.

For people living with Parkinson’s, that kind of mindful movement can be especially valuable because Tai Chi works on balance, stability, coordination, mobility and confidence in movement.

But I think there’s also a lesson there for all of us.

Most of us go through our day moving without ever really thinking about how we're moving.

Tai Chi asks us to slow down enough to become aware again.

Be present. Be intentional. Move on purpose.

A big thank you to Parkinson’s of Flagler Palm Coast for inviting me and to everyone who got up and participated.

I really enjoyed this one.

The world doesn’t need more sissies.

It needs kids who can stand up for themselves.

Teenagers with discipline and direction.

Adults who can remain calm under pressure.

People who take responsibility, face discomfort, and refuse to quit on themselves.

PARKINSON’S & MOVEMENT: COULD TAI CHI HELP?

We’ve been talking about Tai Chi for a while, and we finally found the right person to introduce it to our Parkinson’s community!

We are excited to welcome Sifu Adam Williss owner of The Dragon Institute - Palm Coast Martial Arts. to share how Tai Chi can be adapted to meet the needs and abilities of those living with Parkinson’s.

Tai chi is good for people with Parkinson's disease because its slow, flowing movements help improve balance, walking ability, and motor control.

And of course we have our Spectacular Coach Pamela Jansen Hull kicking us off with some fun activities.

Come join us : Wednesday September 16th at the Palm Coast Community Center!

*** This meeting is exclusively for individuals with Parkinson’s, their caregivers, and loved ones.***

Thank you to the Worldwide Leung Sheung Tong Wing Chun Confederation 《世界梁相堂詠春同學總會》 for their recognition of my role in preserving and carrying the Leung Sheung Wing Chun tradition forward for future generations.

These shots were from my recent workshop at our West Coast school in Irvine, CA under the direction of my student Sifu Derrick Mansell.

Finding Your True Measure Far From Home: ADAM WILLIS

Chinese martial arts often reveal their true worth after crossing oceans. Wing Chun is a perfect example. In America, where fi****ms are common and cage fighting is on television every night, raw combat is hardly scarce. If fists are the answer, there is MMA; if things go badly enough, there is always a gun. Yet people still study and preserve classical Leung Sheung Wing Chun. Why? Not for flashy techniques, but for a timeless principle: Simplicity Is the Highest Form of Sophistication. If a neighborhood confrontation can be controlled with a few calm movements—without drawing a weapon, spilling blood, or turning a small problem into a life-changing disaster—that is real skill. The Chinese character 武 “martial” carries the ancient idea of “Stopping the Spear.” Winning proves you can fight. Knowing how to control a fight, and when to stop, is martial art. For nearly 50 years, Leung Sheung Tong of Florida has carried the lineage Yip Man → Leung Sheung → Ken Chung → Ben Der, with Karl Godwin and Bill Graves as gatekeepers and Adam Willis, who recently returned to Florida to re-establish himself after teaching out of state, helping carry the torch forward. The flame has now passed through more than seven generations. People grow old. Fighting methods change. Good principles do not. Wing Chun crossed half the world without being diluted; tested in another culture, it was polished brighter. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Good steel is tempered in fire—and good Kung Fu travels well.

The Dragon Institute isn’t for everyone.

And we don’t want to be.

We’re not designed to be another place to drop your child off, burn some energy and add another activity to an already busy schedule.

We’re built for parents who want more for their child.

More focus.

More discipline.

More respect.

More confidence.

More accountability.

Our Kids Martial Arts Program is highly structured, with clear expectations, rewards and consequences.

We understand that every child is different. Some need more patience, repetition and guidance than others.

We give them that patience.

But we don’t lower the standard.

We teach them how to rise to it.

Because our goal isn’t simply to have your child behave for 45 minutes while they’re in class.

We want the lessons they learn here to begin showing up at home, at school, around other people — and eventually, when no one is there telling them what to do.

That’s what real discipline looks like.

If you’re simply looking for another activity for your child, there are plenty of options.

But if you’re looking for something that can help shape who your child is becoming, The Dragon Institute may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

We don’t lower the standard for the child.

We teach the child how to rise to it.
