Danzan Ryu Judo/Jujitsu includes escapes, locks, blocks, throws, strikes, kicks, submissions and weapon defense techniques. It is an extremely efficient system of personal-defense, as well as a path to greater self-awareness and health.

Kata is a means by which we transmit and pass on the wisdom of DZR. Practicing kata transmits the principles of our martial art; the footwork, stances, maโai, and timing.
Waza represents the application of those principles in dynamic and eventually spontaneous attacks. Waza requires an understanding of body mechanics, timing, threat assessment, and strategy, as well as constant practice to hone our skills.
Kata and waza are both essential in our journey of mastering DZR, we must strive to develop proficiency in both.

Danzan Healing night at BDD.

Typical Saturday at BDD. Kata and finding kata Waza

Happy to have Professor Belzer drop in last night and work on Shime and Hazushis.

Shihan Jigoro Kano: The five principles of JUDO ๐ฅ ๆ้

One of our students was injured and came to class anyway. She sat off the mat took notes and sketched us throughout the class. The ability to capture moving beings this way in a moment is amazing.

At Bubank Danzan Dojo, we have the Alakaโi program. Alakaโi are brown belts that desire to be leaders and seek opportunities to be of service to others in the dojo. Our tradition is to hike up the mountain overlooking Burbank and present the Title of Alakaโi, symbolized by a brown Kokui Nut Lei. A Kokui nut leรญ is a lei of light and symbolizes the nature and intention of one who seeks to be of service. Maholo for your Kokua Jack and congrats!

Happy Birthday to the founding father of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu
Seishiro "Henry" Okazaki (January 23, 1890 โ July 12, 1951) was the founder of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. He was a Japanese American, legendary martial artist and gifted healer. Born in Kakeda, Date County in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, he immigrated to Hawaii in 1906. At the age of 19 he learned he had tuberculosis. Through hard training in the martial arts, Okazaki recovered completely and vowed to dedicate his life to propagating jujitsu and judo. From 1927 to 1928, Okazaki developed a complete, integrated martial arts system: Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. A synthesis of several older styles of jujitsu, Okazaki included in the system elements of his studies of Okinawan karate, Chinese kung-fu,Hawaiian Lua, Filipino knife fighting (escrima), boxing and wrestling, as well as traditional Japanese restorative massage and healing techniques (Seifukujutsu).
Okazaki initially faced opposition within the Japanese-American community for teaching outsiders Japanese martial arts. This changed after World War II. Like tens of thousands of other Japanese-Americans, Okazaki was interned during the war. Unlike others, however, his home and property were not looted; his students guarded them during the war. Upon their release, Okazaki helped support others in the Japanese-American community. For this he ultimately gained their respect.
Gradually, Okazaki developed a system comprising courses for men, women, and children. In his system, he stressed the ancient system of philosophical and moral training within the martial and restorative arts. He is credited with being the first to teach the full jujitsu course to non-Asians. He also taught perhaps the first women's self-defense course in the country. He founded the American Jujitsu Institute in the Territory of Hawaii in 1939. This is the original Danzan Ryu Jujitsu organization and remains in operation to the present day. In addition to his work in martial arts, he was also very well known for his healing arts.

Big day at BDD. Thanks to all who supported and came out today for our guest instructors and promotions. Mahalo to Professor Bill Randle, Prof. Mike Belzer, Prof. Jack Mauck, Prof. Geoff Lane, Prof. George Arrington, Prof. Hillary Kaplowitz, and via satellite Prof. Bob Hudson. Congrats to new Rokudan, Professor Kimo Williams, Congrats Sensei Brian Sincomb Promoted to Godan, and our dojo head Sensei Ray Scholl Promoted to Yodan.

Dojo: place of the way. Itโs not a gym and it can be any where; as long as you are there. The place where we practice cultivating a receptive state of mind, without preconceived ideas or thoughts, to master the ability of reacting spontaneously and naturally without hesitation and without purposeless resistance. See you there.

Humility
"Don't teach me, show me!"

As we start 2023, good grounding for us.

๐ต Have no falsehood in mind.
Ruluctance or deceit are not conducive to the inner harmony required by Judo practice.
๐ต Do not lose self-confidence.
Learn to act wholeheartedly, without hesitation. Show reverance toward the practice of Judo, by keeping your mind in it.
๐ต Keep your balance.
The center of gravity follows the movement of the body. The center of gravity is the most important element in maintaining stablility. If it is lost, the body is naturally unbalanced. Thus, fix your mind so that your body is always in balance.
๐ต Utilize your strength efficiently.
Minimize the use of strength with the quickest movement of body. Acknowledge that what is called stillness and motion is nothing but an endlessly repeated process.
๐ต Donโt discontinue training.
Mastery of Judo cannot be accomplished in a short time. Since skills depend on mental and physical application, constant training is essential.
๐ต Keep yourself humble.
If you become self-centered, you will build a wall around yourself and lose your freedom. If you can humble yourself in preparation for an event you will surely be better able to judge and understand it. In a match, you will be able to detect the weak point of your opponent and easily put him/her under control.

Our Story
Burbank Danzan Dojo teaches Professor Okazaki's Hawaiian-style Jujitsu and healing arts.
Danzan students learn comprehensive martial arts skills such as striking, kicking, escaping, joint locking, trapping, throwing, grappling, weapon disarms and applications (stick, knife, gun, staff, sword, cord and others) as well as mental/spiritual preparedness.
Traditional Jiujitsu is a Japanese strategy of combat, relying on skill and technique rather than strength and aggression. Along with traditional Jiujitsu, Professor Okazaki incorporated the Chinese Kenpo, Hawaiian Lua and Filipino Eskrima he studied in the islands. The result is a unique blend of Asian-Hawaiian fighting skills that makes for outstanding personal-defense.
Mastering the Danzan ryu (style) demands focused, slow and purposeful practice... cultivating both control and precision..
