In my last post, we talked about how medical professionals and psychotherapists use hypnosis for healing and mental health. But there’s another massive area where it shines: LifeSkills Mentoring.

While medical personnel use hypnosis for physical healing, I use it in my private practice for empowerment and transitional prep.

Think of hypnotherapy as an accelerator that speeds up the process of positive change.

When you navigate a major life shift—especially moving out of the workforce and into retirement—the hardest part isn't the logistics. It’s the inner shift.

Throughout life, every major stage requires a brand-new set of life skills:

● Kindergarten to Middle School: Social adaptation & routine

● High School to Career: Independence & responsibility

● Career to Retirement: Identity, purpose, & personal reinvention

Retirement itself isn't just one event—it unfolds across three distinct phases:

1. The Go-Go Years (~65–75): High energy, active travel, and making up for lost time.

2. The Slow-Go Years (~75–85): A shift toward local connection, routine, and legacy.

3. The No-Go Years (85+): Focus on comfort, deep reflection, and peace.

(If you want to see a great short video breaking down how these 3 life stages actually play out in everyday life, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8e2oP4pHNE)

You’ll see endless local workshops on managing 401(k)s or estate planning. But few (if any) teach the inner life skills needed to let go of a lifelong career identity and step into a new chapter with confidence. That is where applied life skills mentoring, transitional prep, and hypnotherapy come together.

While standard mentors help map out your path, I add hypnotherapy that works directly with your subconscious mind to clear friction, break old habits, and make the shift faster, smoother, and far less stressful.

If you are preparing to step off the career path and into your next phase, you don't have to navigate the psychological shift alone. Drop a comment below or send a direct message to learn how transitional prep can help you make the most of your next chapter.

My knee surgery was just one teeny example of a much larger medical movement in the use of the Hypnotic Arts & Sciences.

Once you strip away the Hollywood hogwash, stage tricks, and medieval fear-mongering, you're left with pure, practical neuroscience.

The reality is that world-class institutions—like Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care, Harvard, and Mount Sinai—use clinical hypnosis every single day.

Here is how mainstream medicine applies hypnotic science across healthcare:

• Pain Control: Wound care in burn units, reduced surgical anesthesia, and relief for chronic pain and migraines.

• GI Health: Highly effective for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and severe nausea (including pregnancy hyperemesis).

• Psychotherapy: A proven clinical tool for eating disorders, addiction, and habit modification.

• Autoimmune Support: Calms the stress responses that trigger inflammatory flare-ups like psoriasis and arthritis.

• Trauma & Panic: Eases PTSD, eliminates pre-surgery panic, and calms claustrophobia during MRIs.

• Sleep & Autonomic Function: Regulates brainwaves for chronic insomnia and significantly lowers hot flashes.

No mind control, no mysticism—just applied neuroscience helping human beings heal.

2-Week Post-Op Update: Clinical Hypnosis in Action 🏥✨

Two weeks ago today, I had surgery for a partial knee replacement. This is my 3rd update in relation to that experience and my use of pre- and post-op medical hypnosis.

I decided to use my own recovery as a real-time test of pre- and post-op clinical self-hypnosis—and the results speak for themselves. Scientific studies show clinical hypnosis can accelerate recovery times and significantly reduce reliance on pain meds. Here’s how my own "experiment" is going:

• Minimal Meds: Completely off daytime pain medication, using only a light dose at night to rest comfortably.

• Smart Mobility: Staples are out! My home PT, Sean, gave me some great self-care advice today—keep a cane handy for outdoor "walkabouts" and keep the walker nearby just for morning stiffness.

• Top 10% Progress: After navigating the yard and driveway, my PT rated my recovery in the top 10% of home healthcare patients he sees. I’ll take that gold star! ⭐

My next major milestone will be in four weeks for my final release visit with Dr. Bowers.

Are you curious about medical hypnosis?

Having served as a consulting hypnotist and health coach at the Health Center in Hillsborough, NC, I’ve long seen how integrative mind-body techniques transform patient care. Head over to my website to read my published research paper: Integrative Hypnotherapy for Diabetes Care: Motivating Change Through Mind-Body Awareness.

In my work as a Life Skills Mentor and Clinical Hypnotist, I support people who feel stuck during major life shifts—whether navigating a career change, redefining themselves, or deciding what comes next.

The challenge at these crossroads is rarely a lack of willpower. It is the hidden resistance of subconscious habits and beliefs.

My practice is backed by over 23 years of experience spanning clinical hypnosis, applied psychology instruction, and behavioral education.

I do not operate within the framework of conventional life coaching or motivational platitudes. Instead, my practice integrates structured, behaviorally informed mentoring with clinical hypnotic techniques.

This foundation was heavily shaped by 20 years as a Life Skills | Applied Psychology professor within the North Carolina Community College System and the Department of Corrections. These high-stakes, concrete environments demanded a brutal, deeply grounded optimization of human behavior, survival, and adaptation. They taught me how change actually functions in the real world.

Let’s talk and explore the possibilities! I am available virtually or by phone or email or text. You can review my CV (qualifications) on my website: davidgrinstead2.academia.edu.

Sessions are offered virtually or in person at my office.
