Meet the Maker: The Hands Behind the 2026 M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon Awards.

Some awards live in a box. Others earn a spot on the mantle. That's exactly what Joe Pasteris sets out to make.

Joe is the Vermont-based maker behind this year's M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon awards: 17 one-of-a-kind pieces handcrafted from wood and metal, designed to capture the feeling of race weekend in Burlington: showcasing a a street map of the city with the marathon route traced across it and Lake Champlain alongside. Look closely, some of the awards, those fit for race champions, even have Champ on them.

"My goal is to make something people want to keep and show off," Joe says. "Something that people will see in your home and go, 'oh cool, tell me about this.'"

A few things we loved learning about his process:

Locally sourced where possible. Joe works with maple hardwood from The Tree House Hardwords and Millshop in South Burlington and sources materials locally whenever possible.

Built at Generator Makerspace. Joe does the bulk of his work at Burlington's community makerspace, using the wood shop, metal shop, and laser cutters to bring each piece to life.

He's one of us! Joe's a runner, too (though, in his words, "I never win my own awards"). Being part of the community shapes how he thinks about what makes an award feel meaningful.

Local materials, local makerspace, local hands. This kind of craftsmanship is what makes race weekend in Burlington feel like Burlington. To the top finishers taking one of these home on May 24: You've earned something built to last.

Meet the 2026 M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon Pace Team at a Shakeout Run on April 9th at 6 PM at SKIRACK in Burlington!

Join us for the run, meet your pace team leaders, and get demos and samples from Altra Running, Skirack, and UnTapped All Natural Athletic Fuel. Altra demos will be going on all day, UnTapped will be on hand starting at 5 PM for samples, and members of the Pace Team will be available starting at 5:30 PM.

Join us May 24 in Burlington for the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay, featuring both a marathon and relay options on a scenic course along Lake Champlain with a start and finish at Waterfront Park. Prices increase March 15, so now’s the time to lock in your spot.

The price also goes up for our Half Marathon Unplugged, which can be completed singularly or with two people. This is a great opportunity to prepare for the Marathon, which is just a couple weeks after!

From Waterfront Park to every mile marker, aid station, and relay exchange zone, we're making sustainability a priority with trash, recycling, AND compost collection.

Together with Bin There Dump That and our other race partners, like the Mount Mansfield Union High School Environmental Club and CSWD Waste Warriors that make up our Green Team, we're committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events.

A big part of that is (1) minimizing the use of single-use items that need to be disposed of and (2) maximizing what is recycled and composted to reduce what needs to be landfilled. This isn’t just good for the environment, it’s also consistent with Vermont’s strategy for the management of waste and the priorities to be reflected in the State’s Materials Management Plan.
