What's wrong Wednesday!

I have taken apart and fixed many over under shot guns but this is a first. I have never seen a hammer "peel" like this. Unfortunately, this company hasn't made sh***uns or parts since the 80s and because it is an obscure brand, finding the parts needed is near impossible. The customer declined further repair as the fi***rm is not worth the cost to make new parts.

What do you think caused this damage?
