25 years later, we remember.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and never returned home.

We remember the police officers, paramedics, dispatchers, rescue personnel, and ordinary Americans who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape it.

And we remember the countless first responders who carried the weight of that day for years afterward.

For those of us in the rescue community, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a reminder of what service, courage, sacrifice, and duty truly mean.

Today, we honor the fallen, their families, and everyone who answered the call.

Screw Links: HAND TIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH.

Saddle hunting has adopted a lot of equipment and techniques from other industries. That crossover has helped our industry evolve quickly, but it can also create a problem: sometimes equipment makes its way into saddle hunting without all of the original knowledge surrounding its intended use and proper application.

And with countless videos, posts, and opinions available online, not everything being demonstrated represents manufacturer recommended best practices.

One example we want every saddle hunter to understand is the proper use of screw links, also commonly called quick links or maillons.

These connectors are generally designed as semi-permanent connections. When used in that application, simply closing the sleeve by hand is not enough. The sleeve should be completely closed and tightened with an appropriately sized wrench to the manufacturer's specified torque.

Why?

A hand tightened sleeve can potentially loosen during use, as well as cause a loss in strength. Proper wrench tightening helps ensure the connector remains completely closed and secured as intended.

Always follow the instructions and specified tightening torque provided by the manufacturer of your particular screw link. Do not assume that the torque specification for one manufacturer's connector applies to another.

Saddle hunting continues to evolve, and part of that evolution is making sure we're not just adopting equipment, we're adopting the proper practices that come with it.

Know your equipment. Know its intended use. Use it the way it was designed to be used.
