Congrats to Shannon Evans and her determined Lab, “Blue” on passing their UBT 2.
Nice dog, nice team, nice track. 👍
It’s always a pleasure to judge such a well prepared team.

Today, we had one call with no recovery. A buck had been shot this morning, and the hunter had tracked it for several hours before contacting us. Initially, he followed a heavy blood trail that turned to drips before disappearing. We began our search at the last known blood location. Blue, with confidence, led us through the woods and across a large creek, where we found blood but were forced to stop as it was the property line. After unsuccessfully trying to reach the property owners we left.

We were nearly home when the hunter called and had received permission to enter the property. We turned around and went back. At this point, I had convinced myself the deer was just on the opposite side of the water. We resumed our search at the blood going up the creek bank. Blue led us through the woods to a field, where we continued up the field and back into the woods. We proceeded to the point where we reached another property line and had to stop. At this point, we decided that it was time to stop our search. It was a total bummer leaving there tonight unsuccessful!

The second call of the day began at the last blood. Blue did not show his usual confidence as I normally see when he's on the track. The line was not tight, he wasn't trying to pull me over and he walked slowly, which confused me! After reaching a small creek, where he paused to cool off, I elected to restart him at the last blood. Following our restart, he remained unusually calm and returned to the same location at the creek. However, this time we continued to the other side, where he ultimately led us to the deer. I was annoyed at myself for not trusting my dog.

Blue, a highly driven 3-year-old Black Labrador Retriever, LOVES trailing a scent line and I thoroughly enjoy working with him! We secured our UBT1 May 2025 and UBT2 May 2026. This will be our second season tracking wounded deer. You can find us on the United Blood Trackers website, the TRAKR app, and Indiana Deer Recovery's page. Please reach out to me at (317) 501-0980 or via Facebook message if you need help. My work schedule restricts our travel during the week. However, we can travel farther Friday evening through mid-day Sunday.

We've had a busy couple of evenings!

Monday -

Our first call was unsuccessful. I was fairly confident that we would be able to assist, but unfortunately, I was wrong! Blue never seemed to pick up a solid track. We tried for several hours. We were disappointed when we had to call it.

Our second call was a different story! Blue was amazing! We started at last blood. Blue very confidently took us through the woods directly to the deer. This track was less than three minutes.

Tuesday -

It rained all day. The buck was shot in the morning and we were not able to get there until 12 hours later. I wasn't sure if the heavy rain would affect our efforts, so I reached out to my mentor. After receiving his advise, we decided to take the call. We started at the hit site and had Blue check multiple times before we continued in the direction he wanted to go. Blue was very confident in this track. We ended up hitting a road that crossed onto private property we didn't have permission to be on. Knowing we were at a dead end, we decided to try again. We took Blue back to the hit spot and had him check again. He took us right back to the exact same spot we couldn't go. I'm not sure if the hunter knew we wouldn't be able to gain permission to continue or if it was too late at night to ask. He was going to continue his efforts the next day.

No recovery today, but the call was filled with great people and great energy. We knew this could be a tough one, but we wanted to try anyways!

Multiple people had searched for the deer. A friend had also flew a drone over. The hunter tracked a large amount of blood to a small creek where he knew the deer crossed. We began our search at that location, where a small amount of blood was found.

Blue confidently took us through the water, up a hill, and through every sticker bush into a field; however, no blood was found. I only fell once! After exiting the woods, Blue took us in the opposite direction the hunter had found additional droplets of blood. Blue began air scenting and we lost the trail.

We circled back around the field to the location where the hunters had found additional small droplets of blood. Blue investigated multiple directions but failed to pick up any further scent. At this point, we questioned whether we would be able to help.

The hunter then received a phone call from someone assisting with the deer's tracking, reporting a sighting of a doe and buck, with the buck possibly having an injury on its leg.

I am uncertain whether we had a deer to recover or if this was a more complicated track than we could work through.

We received a call today that was only 5 minutes from home. The hunters had tracked the deer for 400 yards and then jumped it. Following the jump, they backed out and called us. It was a windy day. We started the search with Blue at the last known blood location found by the hunters. Blue initially attempted to backtrack but soon corrected his course, leading us in the right direction. It was interesting watching Blue track as he was air scenting quite a bit. Blue did take us to the deer but we soon learned he was 20 feet off the blood trail.

12/8/2025 - update to original post. The deer we tracked in November was found by duck hunters today. He was in a river about 500 yards past the property line.

11/10/2025 Thirty hours after the deer was shot, we began our next track. It had snowed and partially melting before we arrived. The hit site yielded no visible blood, leading us to start our search where the deer entered the woods. We found minimal blood evidence near the woods' entrance and about 10 yards inside. Blue led us confidently through every sticker bush, up and down hills, despite the lack of visible blood. Our progress was halted when we reached a property line without permission to cross. Trail camera footage from the hunters confirmed we were on the right track. It is unclear whether we would have recovered the deer if we had been able to proceed. Ultimately, the recovery was unsuccessful.

Our next call was pretty awesome! The hunters were visiting from out of state and had not attempted to recover prior to contacting us. The location was a vast field with tall weeds resembling a maze. We discovered blood shortly after we began the search, only to lose the trail. Blue checked each path and wasn't indicating which way we needed to go. After a while, we decided to restart him. After the restart, we found additional blood, and Blue successfully led us to the deer. It appeared as though the deer had run in a large circle before collapsing.
