I recently visited my grandma while she was in rehab at a nursing home.

And I left there thinking: There is no f #$%ing way I’m ever going to a place like that.

(Not because the people caring for her weren’t kind. I’m not throwing shade at the hardworking people at nursing homes.)

But so much of her day depended on someone else’s schedule.

When she got up.
When she went to the bathroom.
When she got to eat.
When she got dressed.
Literally everything she did.

Obviously there are things about aging, illness, and injury that we cannot control.

But there are things that are absolutely within our power.

Start building strength now.

If you’re 70 years old and the workout today is standing up from your kitchen chair five times, start there.

If you’re 40 and haven’t exercised in ten years, start small - you’re not trying out for varsity, girl. Consistency over intensity.

If you’re 25 and think you have plenty of time, start building your healthy habits now.

Train for 60-year-old you.

70-year-old you.

80-year-old you.

Let’s give that woman every possible advantage we can.

You don’t have to start big.

But you do have to start.

Back to school today!

In between classes at the gym, I spend most of my days as a school resource officer.

20 years ago, if you’d asked if I would ever work in a school, I’d have said not no, but hell no.

But after almost two years in the school, I can honestly say this is absolutely the best gig in law enforcement 💙

On this Labor Day, we recognize two ladies who have been putting in the work!

Janey Faye just passed two years of membership at Ascend and has taken almost 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ CLASSES!!!! While mom-ing, volunteering, and working full-time, Janey continues to show up each morning for herself and her classmates. As the longest-running member, she has stepped in to instruct when needed and I can’t express how much I appreciate the fact that I can count on her!

And Taylor Marie has been working in-studio and remotely depending on what her (crazy) schedule allows. She has dealt with some serious challenges that were beyond her control but she continues to be coachable and consistent. Most importantly she is basing her success on more than the number on the scale. She is focused on losing fat, not muscle. Her measurements and body fat percentage are decreasing while her muscle mass is increasing! This girl is seriously focused on changing her health for life.

So proud of you both and so thankful you continue to choose Ascend 💙

Wondering why we had no class this AM?

I was in Dansville, volunteering for the Livingston County NY Su***de Prevention Task Force at CASA-Trinity’s Color Run/Walk for Recovery 💜

It was a beautiful day to celebrate recovery and give hope to those who need to be reminded it is possible.

Some days we just need to believe that tomorrow will be better. One more day. One day at a time.
