š£ The FALL TRANSITION is already happeningāand a lot of anglers are missing it.
I know the calendar says September, and around here it can still feel like summer, but the bass donāt care what the calendar says. Theyāre already starting to respond to shorter days, cooler nights, changing water temperatures and, most importantly, moving baitfish.
This is one of the biggest mistakes I see anglers make during this time of year: they keep fishing the same summer areas because the water still looks and feels like summer.
Meanwhile, the bass are starting to move.
You may notice your usual summer bite getting inconsistent. Fish that were loaded up on offshore structure suddenly seem to disappear. Some bass are starting to push toward creek mouths, secondary points and shallower feeding areas while others are still hanging around their summer locations. Thatās what makes the transition so toughāyou can have fish scattered all over the lake at the same time.
So what should you be watching for?
š Bait getting thicker in certain areas
š Shad moving toward creeks and pockets
š Bass starting to bust the surface
š Cooler nighttime temperatures
š Water temperatures gradually falling
š Birds feeding over bait
š Fish showing up on points, channel swings and other routes between deep and shallow water
The biggest key is follow the bait. Bass donāt move shallow just because itās fallāthey move because thereās food there. Find the bait and thereās a very good chance the bass wonāt be far behind.
And hereās where a lot of anglers get frustrated: you canāt expect the fish to be in the exact same place every day.
Fall is a moving target.
One day they may be on a point. The next day they may be halfway back in a creek. The day after that, they could be suspended over a channel chasing bait.
This is the time of year when you need to stop fishing memories and start fishing what the lake is telling you TODAY.
The anglers who recognize the transition early are going to be the ones who find the big groups of feeding fish while everyone else is still trying to force a summer pattern.
Fall is comingāand in a lot of places, itās already here.šš£
