📌 Pennsylvania Homeschool Families: Proposed Changes to Chapter 27

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has proposed changes to Chapter 27, the regulations concerning communicable diseases and health requirements.

Here are the key points homeschool families should know:

• The proposed changes affect all Pennsylvanians. There does not appear to be anything in the proposal that singles out homeschool families for different treatment.

• Homeschool medical and vaccination information remains an important privacy concern. Information collected through school districts is being used in reporting vaccination rates, and homeschool data is included within district statistics.

• Co-ops and hybrid programs should pay particular attention. Portions of the proposal concerning the Department of Health's authority to enter certain locations may be especially important for programs operating outside an individual family home.

• The larger concern is parental authority and medical privacy. Parents—not government agencies—bear the primary responsibility for making informed decisions regarding their children's health and well-being.

Whatever a family's personal decisions regarding vaccination may be, parents should understand what information is being collected, how it is being used, and what authority the proposed regulations would give the Department of Health.

Pennsylvanians have an opportunity to review the proposed changes and submit public comments. Do not include private medical information in your comments, because public comments are public.

For Christian families, this is also an important reminder: our children are gifts entrusted to our care, and that responsibility should never be taken lightly.

Be informed. Read the proposal for yourself. Ask questions. And make your voice heard.

Keeper of the Hearth: Protect the Rhythm, Not the Schedule

I remember looking at a homeschool schedule and feeling rather pleased with myself.

Everything was written down. Every subject had its proper place. On paper, the day looked orderly, productive—and almost perfect.

You have heard of “the best-laid plans”—well, they rarely come to fruition, whether in the classroom or in the homeschool room.

Life intercedes…

Breakfast took longer than expected. One child couldn’t find a book. One lesson that should have taken twenty minutes lasted nearly an hour, while another was finished in ten. One child needed to talk. One child needed a break.

Before long, my beautiful schedule seemed to be falling apart—and I could feel the tension beginning to enter our home.

That was the moment when I had a choice.

I could protect the schedule, pushing everyone forward simply because the clock said it was time.

Or I could protect the atmosphere of our home.

A Keeper of the Hearth tends not only to the physical needs of the home, but also to its peace, warmth, and sense of belonging.

As Keepers of the Hearth, we do more than organize lessons, prepare meals, and keep everyone moving. We help set the emotional rhythm of our homes. Our children often take their cues from us. When we become anxious about falling behind, they feel it. When we pause, breathe, and make room for what is truly needed, they feel that too.

The day wasn’t falling apart.

We were learning—and some of the most important learning had nothing to do with finishing the next page.

Are we moving children forward—or are we simply moving on?

A completed workbook can look like progress.

A passing grade can look like understanding.

A child beginning the next level can look like readiness.

But after more than 30 years in education, including my work with gifted learners, I have learned that motion and mastery are not the same thing.

This applies to all children—especially gifted children, whose advanced abilities can sometimes hide unfinished foundations.

In this month’s Research Spotlight, I examine why genuine readiness matters, what mastery actually looks like, and why pausing does not mean that a child is falling behind.

Sometimes, a thoughtful pause is exactly what allows meaningful progress to begin.

Why a Good Curriculum Can Still Be a Poor Fit

Have you ever purchased a curriculum because it was highly recommended—only to discover that it simply did not work for your child?

That does not necessarily mean the curriculum is bad.

And it certainly does not mean that your child is the problem.

Sometimes, the curriculum and the child are simply not a good fit.

The pace may be too fast.
The lessons may require too much writing.
The material may include too much repetition—or not enough.
The teaching method may not match the way your child learns best.

Before purchasing another curriculum, it helps to pause and ask:

Is my child struggling with the subject—or with the way the subject is being presented?

KEEPER OF THE HEARTH - The Home Doesn’t Have to Become a School

One of my clearest childhood memories is sitting alone in front of a bookcase filled with the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Children’s Book of Knowledge.

I could spend hours turning those pages, never knowing what I might discover next.

One afternoon it might be a fairy tale.

On another, an article about evolution or the sun would hold my attention.

I was like a sponge, absorbing bits and pieces of information that might never have been taught in school. No one had assigned the reading, and there would be no test when I finished.

Curiosity was enough.

Only the call to dinner could bring my private learning session to an end.

That bookcase was my first personal learning center—and I was in charge of it.

When I became a mom, I remembered how it felt to have knowledge waiting within reach. I surrounded my children with books of all kinds, including some that had been part of my own childhood.

As the ways we learned began to change, our home library grew to include videos and documentaries.

But the invitation remained the same:

Look. Wonder. Follow the questions that interest you.

That is one of the quiet gifts a home can offer a child.

Learning does not always have to begin with an assignment or fit neatly inside a scheduled lesson. Sometimes it begins when a child pulls a book from a shelf, asks an unexpected question at the dinner table or becomes so interested in a subject that time seems to disappear.

As moms, we can feel pressure to make the home look more like a school. We organize subjects, purchase curriculum and carefully watch the calendar.

Those things have their place.

But they are not the whole of an education.

Children also need room for the learning they choose—the discoveries no one planned and the questions that belong entirely to them.

During our recent summer family vacation, I brought along an old copy of Goodnight Moon to read to our eighteen-month-old grandson. My older granddaughter remembered the story and opened the book herself.

Inside, she discovered her father’s name.

She immediately showed Ian, her Dad, what she had found.

Ian opened the book and pointed to a special scribble he had made when that same copy belonged to him.

For one small moment, three generations met inside the pages of a children’s book.

The mom who had saved it.

The son who had once scribbled in it.

The granddaughter who had uncovered its history.

That moment reminded me that the things we place within our children’s reach may remain with them far longer than we imagine.

A book can carry knowledge.

It can also carry a family’s memory and love.

Years later, another child may open it and discover not only a story, but a piece of where she came from.

The home does not have to become a school.

It can become something warmer—a place where curiosity is welcomed, books are waiting and learning becomes part of the family story.

DON’T CONFUSE PREPARATION WITH ACCELERATION

One memory I carry from my college years is sitting in a shorthand class.

I thought shorthand would be my introduction to the business world.

But after coming from a completely academic academy, I had no idea what shorthand was.

And being left-handed certainly did not make it any easier.

Needless to say, I did not do well.

My professor kindly allowed me to attend the class scheduled before mine.

That meant I spent two hours practicing shorthand each day.

I was working longer.

Trying harder.

But I was not necessarily moving in the right direction.

About halfway through the semester, I realized that the business world was not where I belonged.

I returned to my true love.

Teaching.

That experience taught me something I would later recognize in my own children and in the many students I have taught:

Moving faster—or simply doing more—is not always the same as preparing well.

We want our children to be ready for the future.

So we sometimes assume they need to finish the book sooner.

Begin the advanced course earlier.

Reach the next milestone ahead of schedule.

But faster does not always mean ready.

My own children followed very different educational paths.

One was ready to accelerate.

Another needed patient, one-on-one support.

Another followed a steadier path—and later earned a doctorate.

Each child was preparing for the future.

But preparation did not look the same for each one.

A future-ready child needs more than advanced coursework.

A child needs persistence when the answer does not come quickly.

Curiosity.

Sound judgment.

Responsibility.

The confidence to communicate clearly.

Children also need opportunities to make decisions.

Solve problems.

Complete meaningful responsibilities.

And discover the path that truly fits who they are becoming.

As you prepare for the new homeschool year, ask:

“What does my child need to learn?”

But also ask:

“Who is my child becoming?”

Sometimes the best preparation for the future isn’t moving faster.

It is growing stronger—and learning which path is truly yours.

GIFTED COMPASS - Before You Plan the Year, Look Again at Your Gifted Child

A new homeschool year often begins with curriculum. We compare programs, organize schedules, consider grade levels, and begin thinking about what comes next academically.

But when we are educating a gifted child, I believe there is somewhere else we should begin.

Begin with the child.

Gifted learners can change remarkably from one year to the next. The child who needed additional support last September may suddenly be ready for greater challenge. An interest that seemed casual in the spring may have developed into an absorbing passion over the summer.

And gifted development is rarely even.

A child may be years ahead academically in one area while remaining very much their chronological age emotionally in another. This asynchronous development is one reason simply moving last year's educational plan forward by one grade level may not adequately meet the needs of a gifted learner.

Before deciding what a student should study this year, we need to notice who that learner has become.

What has become too easy? Where is genuine challenge needed? What captures the student's attention without being assigned? Where does frustration continue to appear?

Those observations can tell us far more about educational needs than a grade-level designation alone.

After more than three decades working in education, one principle continues to guide my work with homeschool families:

Curriculum is a tool. The child is the starting point.

We should certainly evaluate curriculum carefully. But curriculum should follow our understanding of the learner—not define it.

As educators and parents prepare for a new academic year, perhaps one of the most valuable things we can do is look again at the learner standing in front of us.

The compass always begins with the child.

GRACE NOTES

Before You Finish the Plan, Look at the Child

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

There is something wonderfully reassuring about a fresh planner, a stack of new books, and a homeschool year neatly mapped out before us.

I understand the temptation to want everything settled before the first day arrives. The curriculum chosen. The schedule written. The lessons divided into weeks. The boxes ready to be checked.

But after all these years in education, I have learned that some of our best planning begins when we stop looking at the planner and start looking at the child.

The child sitting across from you may need more time than the lesson plan allows. She may race through something you expected to take a week. He may suddenly become fascinated by a question that isn't anywhere in the teacher's guide.

That isn't necessarily a disruption to the education.

Sometimes, that is the education.

A plan should give us direction without becoming so rigid that we stop noticing the learner in front of us.

So before you finish planning this homeschool year, give yourself permission to leave a little room.

Room for curiosity. Room for struggle. Room for unexpected interests. Room to discover that something you carefully chose simply isn't working.

And room to change course without believing you've failed.

You don't have to know exactly how the entire year will unfold before you begin.

Know your child.

Begin there.

The education will follow.

Keeper of the Hearth - The Journey Begins at Home

There is a quietness that settles over the last days of July. Summer has not quite finished telling its stories, yet the promise of a new homeschool year is already beginning to stir. Stacks of books wait patiently on tables. Empty planners hold the anticipation of lessons yet to be taught. Parents glance at calendars, wondering if everything will come together before the first morning of school.

For many homeschool mothers, this season brings a familiar mixture of excitement and uncertainty. We want to begin well. We hope we have chosen wisely. We wonder if we have forgotten something important.

After many years of walking beside homeschooling families, I have come to believe that the most important preparation for a new school year has very little to do with curriculum.

It has everything to do with the heart of the home.

Our monthly theme, The Journey Begins, reminds us that homeschooling is not simply an educational choice; it is a family pilgrimage. Every lesson, every conversation, every discovery becomes part of a much larger journey that shapes not only what our children know, but who they become. This week's theme, One Step at a Time, gently reminds us that lasting homes are never built in a single day. They are formed through thousands of ordinary moments that quietly become extraordinary over time.

A peaceful homeschool is rarely the result of perfect organization. More often, it grows from a mother who chooses grace when the schedule changes, patience when a lesson takes longer than expected, and laughter when life refuses to cooperate with the planner. Children flourish in homes where they know they are loved before they are evaluated, encouraged before they are corrected, and understood before they are expected to perform.

Years from now, our sons and daughters will remember surprisingly little about the carefully color-coded schedules that once seemed so important. They may not recall which spelling program was their favorite or what day science was taught. What they will remember is the feeling of home. They will remember reading together on rainy afternoons, conversations around the kitchen table, warm cookies cooling on the counter, unexpected adventures, and the quiet confidence that home was a place where they were known and deeply loved.

Perhaps that is the true work of the hearth.

Its influence is seldom measured in grades or test scores. Instead, it is written into the character of a family, shaping hearts one ordinary day at a time.

As August approaches, resist the temptation to measure your readiness by how many boxes have been checked off your list. Instead, pause for a few quiet moments. Sit with a cup of coffee as the morning light fills your kitchen. Offer a prayer of gratitude for the children entrusted to your care. Ask yourself not, "Is everything ready?" but rather, "How can I make our home a place of peace, joy, and welcome today?"

The answer may be remarkably simple.

A slower morning.

A shared story.

A walk together.

An unhurried conversation.

One thoughtful act of kindness.

One faithful step.

Because that is how every meaningful journey begins.
