Last call for the PIONEER CENTURY! I am one of your wagon masters for this popular event on June 7 presented by Portland Bicycling Club.
Pioneer Century. Those words should evoke visions of beautiful cycling routes in rural Mt. Hood Territory. Discover your own inner pioneer and find out why early pioneers headed this way on the Oregon Trail and wanted to stop here. Pick a trail (35, 62 or 100 miles) and test your mettle.
You may find the terms “Pioneer” and “Oregon Trail” to be a little intimidating and you may, as a novice pioneer, have questions and need reassurance that you will be successful on your trek.
As you conclude your training and preparations for your 2025 PIONEER CENTURY, I, as one of your wagon masters, will answer another frequently asked question from the prospective pioneers:
Q. Will I starve to death out on the trail? I can’t carry enough supplies to see me through to the end!
A. No! There will be humanely spaced rest stops to allow you to soothe your saddle sores, share trail stories with other pioneers, and comfort your Pioneer self with sweet/salty/fresh/indulgent nutritional fuel to power your engine to the finish.
Of course, there will be fresh water easily available for your water transport system. There will even be a special elixir to put in your water that has electrolytes to help your body.
This isn’t our first wagon train. We want you to succeed. Please join us.

Howdy! I’m back! I am one of your wagon masters for the June 7 Pioneer Century presented by Portland Bicycling Club.
Pioneer Century. Those words should evoke visions of beautiful cycling routes in rural Mt. Hood Territory. Discover your own inner pioneer and find out why early pioneers headed this way on the Oregon Trail and wanted to stop here. Expand your horizons and escape the confines of stuffy civilization!
Those terms “Pioneer” and “Oregon Trail” may be a little intimidating and you may, as a novice pioneer, have questions and need reassurance that you will be successful on your trek.
As you continue to train and prepare leading up to PIONEER CENTURY, I, as one of your wagon masters, will answer another frequently asked question from the prospective pioneers:
Q. Will I suffer from dysentery? Everyone is telling me I’ll get dysentery and die along the trail.
A. No! You will find the clean accommodations provided for you to refresh and sanitize along the route. We even have some new-fangled inventions they are calling Porta Potties.
Additionally, there will be fresh water along the trail so you don’t need to drink out of an unsanitary stream with cows standing in it.
We are confident that if you start out healthy, you will finish healthy.
We will even provide some special elixir to put in your water that has electrolytes to help your body.
This isn’t our first wagon train. We’ve got this.

Howdy! I’m one of your wagon masters for the June 7 Pioneer Century presented by Portland Bicycling Club.
Pioneer Century…. You’ll find our routes are in the beautiful Mt. Hood Territory. This is your chance to discover your own inner pioneer and find out why early pioneers headed this way on the Oregon Trail and wanted to stop here.
The terms Pioneer and Oregon Trail may be a little intimidating and you may, as a novice pioneer, have questions and need reassurance that you will be successful on your trek.
As you train and prepare leading up to PIONEER CENTURY, I, as one of your wagon masters, will answer frequently asked questions from the prospective pioneers:
Q. What if my “wagon” breaks down on the trail or I just can’t make it? Will I be left for marauding animals?
A. This isn’t the 1800’s friends, no need to carve messages into bleached bones on the side of the trail. No, we will have SAG (Support and Gear) vehicles roaming the trail looking for stranded pioneers. Our frontiersmen and women might help you on the side of the road, haul you and your “wagon” to a blacksmith for repairs or even deliver you to the safe haven where you started in Canby!
You will find a phone number on the map of the route and just call that number and assistance will be dispatched forthwith.
We will be there for you.
