Does your training plan include training sessions specifically designed around different heart rate zones?
Steady state training, also known as long slow distance, focuses on the aerobic energy system, which is the cornerstone of every athlete’s performance. Long duration sessions keeping the heart rate 70 to 80% of Max heart rate; a light jog, spirited walk, light, heavy bag session or time spent on the rowing machine are all excellent examples.
Mid to high intensity training sessions focus on the performance of our anaerobic power systems as well as sharpening our mental toughness.
Shorter duration sessions with the heart rate above 85% of max; sprinting, jumping rope, battle rope, kettlebell work, sparring, all excellent examples.
The best fitness plans include a combination of time spent in the various heart rate zones as well as resistance, training, core, and mobility work.
